Moving from Canada..Do you need to put $$ value on boxes?

Hi. I know you have to label each box with contents but do you need to put a value on each item inside? Gees that could be daunting! Is there any link to help with this?

Hi There

I feel you girl! I have moved also from Dubai, UAE last December and FEDEX wants my 4 huge boxes of personal effects to be itemized up to the number of underwear inside it... Its ridiculous. All my stuff are used and they said that I can put any amount on my clothes as long as it will not exceed the value of 1,000$ or the insurance for it will be higher...

I just put the amount of each of my clothes and get on with it.... received it after a week or so in good hands...

I told FEDEX there isnt anything in the boxes that Customs will be interested in... lol

No. I used a spreadsheet and I 'think' I added the approx value for big items but not on boxes themselves.

I'd ask this in the Candian forum if you want recent answers from people in the same situation

We just listed stuff out, and they never looked at it, never looked at belongings. The only thing that was formally imported and needed the estimated value was the vehicle (if you are driving). It may be different flying.

Did not need to put estimated value. Only needed for unaccompanied goods.

We completed lists with the moving company that matched each one of my numbered boxes, including wardrobe boxes with clothes on hangers. I listed a general idea of the contents of each box, ie. *previously worn* (which was on each box) and then general items inside-- jeans, sweatshirts, socks. or bathing suits and gym clothes, but we did not list every item. It was a full time task as it was!

I did have a list and photograph of everything I thought was of value, but that was more for the moving company insurance than customs.

We just numbered each box and on a separate sheet we put what was in each box i.e. Box 1 - clothing; box 2 kitchen etc. We then just added things like Freezer, garden tools, wheel barrow, 2 bikes etc at the bottom of the list. We just put a dollar value on all our contents i.e. $50,000 (same value as contents for home insurance).

Everything we brought into the US had been owned for over a year. My husband and kids are dual citizens so we had to provide copies of their passports.

Our mover got sent to secondary inspection (cost to us $280) -- not sure if it was random check etc. Secondary inspection pulled some items off truck - and then rammed stuff back into moving truck (moving company was not permitted to touch goods). We had some damaged furniture which we had to get refinished. We were just happy to get the move over with after waiting so long....

US Customs at crossing were professional but courteous.

You really only need value estimates when you are shipping unaccompanied goods and for vehicles.
