Hi,

We are moving from the UK to Charlotte, NC. DH is applying for jobs now and has head hunters in the case. We are to fly to NC after our house sale exchange on the 6th of June.

Ideally, we want to secure a place to rent before we arrive to save us living in a hotel. (We have pets too) has anyone secured a rental property without proof of a job? there is a ch age DH won't secure something before we leave in 3 weeks. Some companies do skype interviews but others want to meet him face to face.

We are willing to pay double deposits or even 6 months in advance .....anyone know if this will suffice? We are going through American Homes 4 rent.... They seem to have this standard application process with no where to explain your situation when I spoke to them on the phone they didn't seem to know about expat families and different routes depending on situations.

So stressful! :-/

If you are renting a house from an individual, the terms of the rental and requirements vary from owner to owner, which is to say all you need to is find someone who would be willing to rent you the house on a deposit alone. I am sure if you are willing to advance 6 months of rent you should have no issue. If you were looking for an apartment if might be a different story.

It's really going to be up to the individual renters/owners. Some will require proof of income/background check/deposit in advance. My current place required all of the above. If you look around a... not-quite-as-desirable area... they're usually much more loosey goosey with things.

You can even try something like CraigsList and contact the owners directly and see what they'll be willing to do for you.

American Homes 4 Rent appears to own the houses they rent, so their inventory will be smaller than what is truly available. I would just find a local realtor to look for rentals for you in your area.

There may be an issue with wanting only 6 months, most rentals are for 1 year initial lease. You could ask the realtor if they could negotiate 6 months or you can always break the lease.

All good comments above. Use a real estate agent -- some specialize in rentals. Dealing directly with individuals could land you in a mess, if the rental house turns out to be a dump or in a bad neighborhood. The last thing that you'd want after relocating from overseas would be a legal or situational mess.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

To be honest, I wouldn't want to rent ANYWHERE without having seen the house/apartment and the neighbourhood with my own eyes first. You don't want to wind up stuck in cracktown USA or paying an overinflated price for a rundown property based on a couple of photos or an entry on Craigs List. If you don't have somebody you trust to do the physical inspection for you, a week or so in a hotel might be well worth the extra expense...

in your situation, I would definitely hire a Realtor. They will do the ground work for you and have the discussions needed with owners/agents to explain your situation.

my husband and I rented a place in Indiana without seeing it and husband did not have a job at the time.

It definitely can be done!
