My guy isn't here to live yet, but I know for certain it's only going to be a DAY before he mopes going 'I want BBC news!". Not that I blame him, I did appreciate how British news anchors actually speak to you like you're a thinking human being rather than a five year old who needs coaching [ala most U.S. news programs]. I think he will very much miss 'proper' pronunciation too. To this day we have go-rounds about it. "Wrath is pronounced 'ROTH!' Not 'RA-TH!!" He tells me, hehe.

I'm not from the U.K. of course but I spent so much time there, and miss so much stuff myself. The big jugs of concentrated Ribena, the king of all purple goo. M&S tea biscuits, chocolate cake rolls, & walnut whips. The fact that you can catch buses or trains ANYWHERE, not just in the big cities. Awesome curry take-out [it's rare here, I've had to learn to cook curries myself]. Prawn crackers!! Minstrels, Mr. Kiplings [he is a god!] and Jaffa Cakes! Irn Bru and how friggin' good it is at helping hangovers. Guy Fawkes day and how you hear firecrackers for a whole week! Cornish pasties! Mulled wine available at stands during Christmas. LUSH stores located EVERYWHERE. Man, I could go on [You can tell I'm hungry, hehehe]

I'm hoping I can keep some traditions of comfort alive for Andy when he gets here. I've learned to cook proper Sunday roasts with parsnips and proper Yorkshire puddings, as well as curries and fry-ups. We're totally going to celebrate Guy Fawkes day and have Boxing Day as well. I even got him an electric kettle so he doesn't have to use my old fashioned stove-top one when he needs his cuppa, hehe.

I just have to say I admire all of you who have come from another country to begin a new in a whole new place. I'm sure you're just like Andy who says 'I will miss the U.K. but if I were to stay, I'd be missing you more so it's more than worth it" but I know it's still a big transition. I really admire it because I don't think everyone can. I hope you're all loving your lives here with us Yanks :) [and I hope you all have ways to get those comforts from home when you need 'em too]

i miss.....

5 weeks off a year and cheap holidays ! my friend did a 4 day trip to las vegas from england with flight and accommodation for cheaper than just a flight for me from texas to las vegas !!

plus two weeks holiday a year is just ..... grrr

and being able to walk around.. everything is so spread out here... get in your car park.. pop in shop, dont have what you want (or you want to see if its cheaper in the other shop).. get in your car, drive another 20 miles, pop in shop (which you cant really just "pop in" shops here cus theyre so big you get lost)... find it was cheaper back in the other shop.. get back in car, drive back another 20 miles. ! then remember you forgot something when you did your shopping at the grocery store, and that was 20 miles back in the other direction !

oh and trousers that have short medium or tall lengths !

Theres a lot of things i do like here though... one of my favourites - floating down the river on a tube with a strongbow in hand with my sweetpea floating down beside me on his tube! rivers were never warm enough for that in england !

I just asked him and he said (and I knew this but I forgot) that they are files not the actual shows...which is the same if you have a divX player....do you have that??? He said he can burn the files for you if you have DivX to be able to play them back, but otherwise he won't have time before he goes (going to England on Wed...we leave Tuesday morning to go down...) ...let me know if you see this, k? Also...how many of the last ones did you miss? :) M.

:( Aw, bummer Mags. (maybe eventually you can get one...if you would have any use for it...ours was only about 50 bucks!) Anyway, he said he could burn them properly so they aren't files, but it takes an hour or more for each show and he said whe wouldn't have time to do it before we leave..did say maybe he could do it while he's in England though, so let me know if you want him to do any of em.....you'd get em *eventually* at least...heheheeh :) M.

Edited to add: I don't know why I want you to have these so bad, but I do!! Probably because Ijust love the show too and would have been really bummed not to see the last few!!! :) M.

I think DivX is just something you can download... well, I know it is, 'cos I've got it on my laptop (makes video files that previously wouldn't do anything play perfectly - other than that, I have no clue what DivX actually is)... don't know if the free thing I downloaded is what you'd need, or if there is some more complicated thing that might be necessary! But if you Google DivX... the free things on their site worked for me. As you can tell, I have no idea what I'm talking about, but someone once told me to download DivX, I thought 'huh?', but did so... and all the videos I was previously unable to watch suddenly started working. Hurrah! :)

ETA... ahhh, after the last post appearing while I was typing this one, maybe the download thing won't work... damn.

Hmmmdidn't know that about music files...prob. pretty much the same thing...I don't know the 'ins and outs' of it, I just know that Craig can download files now really quickly, and with the DivX dvd player we have we can just watch the shows right from the file...it's like it's super compressed or something. It takes him (this will vary with computers I imagine) about an hour to download an whole episode of Dr. Who (or whatever...also depending on the file size of course) but he can get just the file much much quicker....and then...whaaaa la...just watch it right from the file. Like you say...same thing with the music files...these dvd files wouldn't look like/ do anything without the divX player either....I wonder if there *is* something you can just download to watch it on a laptop or desktop computer? Hmmmmmm. M.:) (Ok, #######...I'm supposed to be doing homework that I won't be here to do next week, not on VJ! Talk to ya later girls!:) M.

Mags, you can download a divx player...

and I'll burn them for ya cos they won't take an hour a show

They only take a really short time for the *files*, but on Craig's computer at least they take about an hour per show if you burn the actual show...not just the file. He used to have to do it before we got the DivX. Glad to know you can download one though, Mags. Let me know if you want him to do that...if Lisa wants to do it, that's fine by me too...Craig's goin in a couple of days anyway. Just glad you'll get to watch em somehow. :)M.
