Idaho's governor said Thursday he will support public hunts to kill all but 100 of the state's gray wolves after the federal government strips them of protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter told The Associated Press that he wants hunters to kill about 550 gray wolves. That would leave about 100 wolves, or 10 packs, according to a population estimate by state wildlife officials.

The 100 surviving wolves would be the minimum before the animals could again be considered endangered.

"I'm prepared to bid for that first ticket to shoot a wolf myself," Otter said earlier Thursday during a rally of about 300 hunters.

Otter complained that wolves are rapidly killing elk and other animals essential to Idaho's multimillion-dollar hunting industry. The hunters, many wearing camouflage clothing and blaze-orange caps, applauded wildly during his comments.

Some of these guys are nuts:

Otter also signed a proclamation making Thursday "Idaho Sportsmen Day."

The crowd -- including one hunter with a stuffed baby fox around his neck and a sign declaring "Wolves are illegal immigrants too" -- stood for more than an hour in the midmorning snow.

I find this appauling. The animals are just getting off being endangered and he wants to start a killing spree. This bozo obviously knows nothing about wolves. Their whole pack dynamic is really complex. So much so that in captivity, it's difficult to keep a pack of larger than five members. Randomly kill off 85% of all the wolves, and more than likely a good number of the rest will die within a year because they won't have enough of their pack left to hunt effectively, and they don't easily co-mingle or join with other packs.

Merf...

What if they could kill entire packs at a time?

After all, there is the issue of peoples livelihoods being destroyed by too many of these predators.

Eh... the only livelihood they seemt to mention is the 'hunting industry'. So.. they want to kill off a vast majority of a nearly endangered species, so that humans can go kill the prey animals instead and hang them up on their walls as trophies.

Anyways, it would be theoretically 'better' to kill an entire pack at once, but I doubt that's going to happen. I think the better idea would be to re-locate some of the animals to areas where they are trying to bring back the species, such as Yellowstone and other areas in the North.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Wolves threaten people's livelihood, but there are ways to manage animal populations that don't involve randomly shooting 85% of it, no? Just like there are ways to manage forest fires without chopping down all the trees.

complete and utter bs. wolves primarily eat rodents, not big game animals. this is just a way for them to rationalize killing off a wonderful creature.

How the hell do morons like this guy get elected to office? I say shoot Mr. Otter instead. Maybe let him go hunting with Cheney? That would solve it.

Hunters: 'Waaaah. The wolfs are eating the animals we want to kill for trophies. Waaaaaa!' Stupid, rednecks...
