After saying last week that “big ol’ women” in San Antonio, a place where “Victoria is definitely a secret,” was a “gold mine for weight-watchers,” Charles Barkley figured to be making the requisite tail-through-the-legs apology after the uproar commenced. Anybody else would have had to. But not Sir Charles, one of the handful of people in America who can say whatever he wants and get away with it.

During Sunday night’s telecast, Barkley was defiant in his lack apology:

“If you don’t like me or the show, turn it off. And they want me to apologize. That’s not going to happen. That’s not gonna happen. You all can write letters to your momma, your daddy, your uncle. I’m going to have fun on television. You know that I’m joking around. But if y’all waiting on me to apologize, hell gonna freeze over.”

The guffaws from the rest of the crew didn’t help the optics — it felt like piling on. (The “Barkley is a loose cannon” schtick works much better when Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson are playing the straight men.)

But even though we don’t condone the words, Barkley’s refusal to apologize should be commended. He was never going to believe any apology he made anyway, so why bother? Sincere defiance is far better than disingenuous apology.

Good for Charles for doing what he's paid to do - entertain. He's an employee of a cable network and only has to answer to them. He's not the first sportscaster to make off color remarks, but he does happen to be liberal and vocal on political issues so right wingers are going to latch on.

Or some are a lifelong Rockets fan and that team stupidly traded for his lard azz and he didn't do squat. I remember him demanding the ball and hold it for most of the 24 seconds and he would back in with his big Cadillac sized rear and then pass it out to some with a second left on the clock and then berate the player for missing the shot. He would blame everyone else for his sub par play. He is a loser on the court and anything he says is loser talk. Really don't even get me started on this trash.

I miss Keith Olbermann....well his political show at least, I know he is back strictly doing sports again.

btw he's liberal? I always thought he leaned towards the right based on some of the comments he has said in the past. I could be wrong I honestly don't pay much attention to him.

You could be right, but my impression is that he'd run as a moderate Democrat.

Barkley is hardly a Liberal

Barkley-“I feel sorry that young kid got killed, but they didn’t have enough evidence to charge him."--On TM

Barkley-The biggest misconception is that the Democratic Party does so much to help poor people. In a whole lot of cases, the Democratic Party keeps people poor." He goes on to say that nearly every person in his hometown is a Democrat, and their lives are no better than they were 20 years ago

lol nah. I just remember he wanted to run for some office as a Republican. Granted this is is from his wiki page but I seem to recall these events. He now considers himself Independent.

Barkley spoke for many years of his Republican Party affiliation. In 1995, he considered running as a Republican candidate for Alabama's governorship in the 1998 election.[71] However, in 2006, he altered his political stance, stating "I was a Republican until they lost their minds."[72] At a July 2006 meeting of the Southern Regional Conference of the National School Boards Association in Destin, Florida, Barkley lent credence to the idea of running for Governor of Alabama, stating:

I'm serious. I've got to get people to realize that the government is full of it. Republicans and Democrats want to argue over stuff that's not important, like gay marriage or the war in Iraq or illegal immigration... When I run — if I run — we're going to talk about real issues like improving our schools, cleaning up our neighborhoods of drugs and crime and making Alabama a better place for all people.

Yeah I knew there was a reason why I didn't like him....nah j/k I think most of the stuff he says on air is funny. I don't really care about his politics unless he throws his hat in the ring and runs for something.

Fatties can help it, therefore they can be made fun of.

I still don't understand why the TM/GZ case had something to do with political party.
