Things you'll miss from the UK, and how you'll compensate?

The Hershey's made creme eggs are an insult to chocolate!

Imagine a similar thread in a forum for Americans who live in the UK. "I miss Hershey's and Budweiser so I make myself vomit and drink my own p**s so I don't miss the taste"

I'm struggling a little here in VA, not with food just with life in general :(

fcat, if you would like... and if you are anywhere near me.... I would be happy to take you around to a few places so you can find items you may be missing. I know how hard it is to adjust to life in the US and being away from family and friends. It took me a good two years to feel comfortable here. The first year was killer. Anyway... just wanted you to know that.

I miss English chocolate so much... there is only so much peanut butter based chocolate I can handle in a life time.

I miss Aero, whispers, double deckers, picnics, curly wurly's, revels, twirl, minstrels, the list goes on.

The chocolate you can get in America like twix, Kitkats and snickers have peanut butter varieties. Why? Why the whole peanut butter and chocolate bar thing????

I guess there's a market for it.

The thing which was hard for me to come to terms with is that it's perfectly fine for the US to have their own "things" just like every other country in the world does. Most people here grew up with the American version of things so that is what they are used to. Our tastebuds have just been conditioned differently.

Those of you in America may hate me for this but my wife sent this hamper yesterday as congratulations for passing the interview! My mouth did not stop watering!

I love peanut butter as much as the next person...but eating it with pretzels is something I find particularly odd.

England has it's own weird things. I've seen things there I've never seen here like orange Kit-Kats and some other flavors I don't recall.

Peanut butter filled pretzels are the most amazing thing ever.

Here on the West Coast we can buy many British sweet things but as I'm trying to avoid them that's not a good thing :-)

And in terms of what buyers think we're looking for - check this one out. Quite impressed to see some Tunnocks - rather like them. Some of the prices are of course - not quite what they were at Asda....

And on a different note. I'm not actually missing the UK. Of course I am missing family and friends and I am looking forward to the novelty of going on holiday to the UK this summer (USCIS permitting). That said - after nearly six months I'm not lying awake thinking about my life in the UK or indeed thinking about the differences between it and the US. I was expecting to get homesick at the some point but my feelings are nothing like that. I guess it helps that I have been coming her since 1996 so it's not as alien as for someone uprooted with relatively little preparation. Relatively cheap comms - phone, email, Whatsapp, FB, Skype etc make it a lot easier to keep in regular contact with a wide range of friends than when my partner first moved here in '96. Chatting and exchanging photos in real time with my brother on a weekend to Edale while I'm driving to Reno does make for a difference experience.

I look forward to a proper night out with friends and going for a "ruby" and I know I'll be bringing some foodstuffs back - certainly marmite but I suspect it will be an odder experience for me as a visitor in the UK than for me being at home in the US.

Good god, Tunnocks were like sex in my mouth. I haven't thought about them in a very long time.

I've been in the USA for over 8 years now, and it's an endless source of mystery to the better half that I haven't once professed to be homesick. Sure, I miss a few things here and there, but my home is where my family is and they are here. :)

As for Marmite ... I really, really don't miss it. Really. :hehe:

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself
