  1. 1. The Chinese still know how to dream big dreams. Why has America forgotten?

    • Because we're busy collecting followers on Twitter. Priorities, man!
    • Because the fiscal conservative naysayers have killed the can-do spirit in America.
      0
    • Because liberals who love to spend have hollowed America out from the inside.

    • We still dream big. The premise of the question is false!
  2. 2. Do you like the idea of a train from mainland China to America's Pacific coast?

    • Yes, but only if it carries commercial goods only. No people.
    • Yes, but only if it carries people! People to people contact is the best bulwark against conflict.

    • No. The last thing this country needs is another way for the Chinese to send their manufactured goods and people here.

China is considering building a high-speed railway across the Siberia and Bering Strait to Alaska, across Canada to the US. In not so distant future, people can take the train from China to the US, according to Beijing Times Thursday citing Wang Mengshu, a railway expert and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The proposed journey will start from China's northeast region, cross Siberia to Bering Strait, and run across the Pacific Ocean by undersea tunnel to reach Alaska, from Alaska to Canada, then on to its final destination, the US. To cross Bering Strait will require approximately 200km undersea tunnel, the technology, which is already in place will also be used on Fujian to Taiwan high-speed railway tunnel.

A train from China to the US is unlikely to be faster, cheaper, more convenient, or safer than flying. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but it doesn't seem to me like the numbers would be even close. As far as commercial goods, airplanes have got it covered for the stuff we want quickly and ships have got the heavy stuff covered.

We're talking about thousands of miles of track to be constructed and maintained, crossing an ocean and some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world.

Sorry AJ...but the options are lacking.

I would answer "we still dream big"...coz it's true. In fact.. (many of the) millennial's "dreams" for technology make me feel old & inadequate. & having seen Terminator...I sometimes pause & consider if I should just kill 'em now to "save the Human world". (bonus = I'm not old and inadequate anymore)

I wish we dial down trade with China & move it to Mexico and South America. That option is not included = I cannot cast a vote.

Why a tunnel? Just build a bridge. :)

I'd hazard a guess that the weather over the Bering Strait might not be conducive to:

A. Building the bridge, or;

B. Keeping a high speed train running across it

Whereas a tunnel may be cheaper to construct, easier to construct, structurally safer and nice and cozy warm. :)

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

That is what I suggest. Let's start improving the life of our neighbors. As their wealth increases then our borders can open open up more. Why make China wealthy when they think of us as the enemy?

OK a covered bridge then. :star:

6 months on 6 months off. Pay them double and watch them spend more quality time with family. I even suggest maybe putting up huge mirrors to reflect the sun light to the area and change the weather pattern. Then we can build artificial islands along the way and have Bahama theme parties during time outs. Bring in hot Asian babes in bikinis to populate the region.

Still has the issue of the construction window. You can tunnel all year round. Your window for bridge construction may be less than 6 months per year..

Sounds like the beginnings of a SyFy movie.
