Or maybe a Mexican prison is just that bad. I saw Gringo with Mel Gibson so I'm a bit of an expert on this subject.

lol. I have had friends and family in Mexican prisons and elsewhere in Central America. Prison life is not cheap. If you want to eat well and sleep comfortably, you got to pay. Getting out of prison is a lot harder than getting in. The wheels of justice turn slow, and foreigners, especially American's, will be bled for money as much and as long as possible. One cousin, who was arrested for drug possession, spent six months there just waiting to see a judge. Finally, on the advice of the local consulate, the family just stopped sending money to the lawyer handing the case. He was released soon after without seeing a judge, or even being charged.

Sounds like the movie was right.
