I am sending off for name change today with social security office as my work permit is arriving in the post around 2-3pm (can't go in as social sec offices all close at 3!! And have gotten a job offer to start Monday. My concern is naturally it will take a while for social security to process my name change and I'm concerned the employer will check for match before the change is complete! For the record the name change is after marriage, I arrived on a k1 visa and am in AOS

Just use maiden name for work for now if they won't let you use your married name. You could show them the marriage cert to prove it's really you, but if it doesn't work, just use the maiden name.

I wouldn't send the name change in; I would go to SSA first thing in the morning or something.

Congrats on the job!

I just don't know when il ever get to physically go to a social security office considering they're only open 9-3 and I work 8.30-5.30 mon to fri. The job would b happy for me to use married name as tjhats what my work permit will be in but it's just the social security issue incase they check it. If I start my job in maiden name then apply for name change I still have same issue of names temporarily not matching , can't believe they close so early! If they closed at 5 I'd have no trouble getting it all done today.,

Do the social security automatically know I have elligibilty to work? Or am I supposed to go in with my work permit. Reason I ask is if I just do job in maiden name I can wait a few weeks when my work schedule changes and go get name changed then in person with them but this only works if the social security office don't need me to come in before I start work to show proof of permission to work

You will show your employer the EAD card and that is your eligibility.

You are just getting a name change now.

The SSN you get based on EAD will still have the "valid only with work permission" wording on the top.

You have all the right docs to work now. You don't have to go to the SSA to alert them of anything.

Did you also show your marriage certificate? Do you have to show the SSN to get the DL or can you just use the number?

It is you, no matter what sillies say :)

So just a little update. Went to social sec today to change name, turns out uscis haven't updated their records so social sec couldn't confirm name change (could take up to 4 weeks) so I can't get a drivers permit yet :( (I even tried my luck at DMV just incase again but no luck) so now I'm wondering how on earth I'm gonna drive the 25 miles to work because as I understand the CA law states that ur a resident once u get ur work permit and therefore have to get drivers icense within 10 days :(. I have my uk license but itl no longer be legal because of the work permit

Your marriage cert is proof of name change for SSA.

And your EAD is as well.

They should give you SSN based on EAD alone.

Sorry you had troubles.

they should but apparently im not that lucky, it needed to be verified on some kind of online system and because it couldn't be verified online it has to be pending -awaiting confirmation from USCIS- could take up to 4 weeks aswell. I have a number I can call so im gonna call them literally everyday to check up on it and I have a DMV appointment booked for Friday so praying it ready by then but I seriously doubt it.

This post has information about name changes.

It's too late now, but I would have asked for a supervisor. You have EAD and marriage cert, issuing a name change should not be a problem. The EAD should do it by itself, really. Gotta be assertive :)

It seemed that a supervisor was actually helping the lady serving me but she was so blunt and matter-of-fact about everything it was really frustrating, and when Im frustrated I tend to wanna cry lol so I don't push it as much as I could.

That's understandable; however, "if you are not for yourself, who will be for you"?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
