My wife is still a Japanese citizen. We just got married last month. She is wondering if she should go to the Japanese Consulate here in New York City and let them know that she is now married. There are probably positives and negatives to this for both of us, right? For the foreseeable future we still plan to live in NYC.

Has your wife come to US with k1 visa and got married

in US? If so yes she must report to Japanese consulate about marriage.

In website of Japanese consulate should tell the procedure

of how to report marriage in US. There shouldn't be negative side

in telling Japanese consulate about marriage. The reason your

wife has to do is that to reflect in her family registry in Japan.

She will have to have new passport issued if she

changed her surname to yours in US.

Thanks for the reply,

I feel like I'd heard that a positive to not reporting it right away is that she'd be able to use her Japanese passport when in Japan, but I'm not sure. Is there any other positive or negative that you guys may know of?
