I'm really concerned because she has had a bad bout of Malaria last June and it took her two weeks to recover. She went to the doctor today and they gave her a 3 day regiment of anti malarial drugs, a blood tonic, and vitamin C and told her to eat heavy. I really wish I could get her treated in the states next week when she arrives because I think the doctors are not properly treating her because it seems like it keeps coming back. After she goes through port of entry at JFK, I'd like to get her checked out here, but of course she has no insurance, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with getting health care while on your 90 day k1 stay in the states or if you had any relapse of Malaria while in the US and had to get treatment without healthcare coverage?

Where I live there are clinics that base your cost of treatment on your income. If you don't have income and you are being supported by someone then that person can write a letter stating what kind of financial assistance that they are giving. Before I started working in my current job I was a substitute teacher and only paid 10% of the cost. Although I'm not sure how this would come into play with the I-134. It's definitely something that you may want to check into.

Was she given injections and tablets or tablets only. I had recurrent malaria while I was in Ghana but it wasn't until I purchased expensive meds that the malaria went away. So you may even have her to talk to a pharmacist or chemist about her options for treatment.

She was told to take two tablets twice a day for 3 days. She never has had any injections. I'm assuming she is buying the expensive meds but I will find out for sure when she wakes up tomorrow morning. Can she get the expensive meds in Ghana or does she have to do that here?

She can get those in Ghana. The injections are said to work faster. I don't know the name of the injection that I was prescribed but I bought it from a chemist that was next to the clinic that I went to.

Malaria meds will probably be expensive in the US, because you don't really get it here so I'm sure not every pharmacy has a stockpile of them like they do in Ghana and other like places. We only treat cases from people who have acquired it traveling overseas.

Malaria is region specific so be sure that your doctor in the US is aware of where she is from and treats her with the proper medications. It is normally contracted from a mosquito bite and few people there use sleeping nets ( or lift them up during the day letting the critters under ) Look up travel clinics they are more apt to have the medicines that your regular doctor and pharmacists

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

The CDC has a malaria hotline where you can ask your questions. I would also google as much as you can to be prepared in understanding

the treatment plan the doctor will do and stay on top of it.

http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/diagnosis_treatment/treatment.html%C2'>

Malaria can and does reoccur,it only takes one bite. Latent liver issues also cause a relapse, depending on the mosquito species.

Just because she had it once doesn't mean she has developed a life time immunity.

Where plasmodium vivax is the predominant species, liver clearance is required after vivax infections, or on leaving the malaria area to prevent the latent infection in the liver from coming out afterwards and causing relapsing malaria.

I asked her whether the IV option was offered to her and she only said she had the 3 day treatment option(malar.2) She said she wants to wait out the treatment and will be getting her second shot for the visa next Monday so if she's not improving she's going to ask about the IV or the Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) option. Thanks for the help everyone.

I hope she recovers quickly and is able to travel. My fiance too has come down with malaria, but is in the process of getting the injections. I was happy to see that your journey seemed pretty quick. But I also commend you on your knowledge and organization. Would you mind if I reached out to you in the future if I have any questions? You really seem to have done your research. I'm just patiently waiting for our approval so we can be together soon.

She is finishing her treatment today and says she is feeling better but I'm already planning on addressing her health care in the states. I looked up the information on my healthcare provider and they're saying she must reside within the U.S. for six consecutive months which means I'll have to pay for her health care expenses during that period. So I'm advising her to bring some medicine with her and look into getting that shot that was discussed that wipes out the malaria parasite once and for all. Hopefully all the malaria is gone from the current treatment. Thank you everyone for your support!
