Hi everyone,

My husband's wallet has been lost or stolen (not sure which), and with it his green card. His Removal of Conditions is about a month and a half away. We have photo copies of the green card in the file I keep and we are wondering if we are able to apply for the removal of conditions without filing the I-90... honestly I suspect we have to but I'd like to hear from people who know for sure. $450 wasted imo :(

Hopefully we just find the stupid thing.... I plan to keep looking right up until the end.

Have you filed a police report?

Nope, in all honesty we probably won't unless we're sure it's gone. There's at least one more place we'd like to check first (have to wait for a key to get in, it's a house he was doing some work on, on Tuesday).

Being so close to ROC -- filing a police report is cheaper and a lot less hassle than filing the I-190, provided you can't find it.

Thank you for this, knowing we wouldn't have to pay an extra $450 is a relief. If we don't find it (still hoping!) would we need to include the police report in the packet we send?

You're so close and within the time frame for ROC, filing an I-90 would be a real waste of cash. Include the police report with the ROC packet. Once you have the NOA for the ROC, you can make an InfoPass appointment to get the I-551 stamp in the passport.

Send in your application with the copies of the GC you have. As long as you do not get selected for an interview, you will not need that GC ever again. I would file a police report should you not be able to find it and then take that police report to your interview IF you have one. Otherwise keep the police report in a safe place until the 10 year GC arrives. Then make copies of that GC so you have it just encase.

Good luck,

Dave

Won't be able to travel, in my state, won't be able to apply for a driver's license, nor a job, not entering college without that green card. These were the only times my wife and stepdaughter had to show their green cards. Is the USCIS sending out ten year cards now, or that crazy one year extension notice? Wife and stepdaughter needed both.

Stepdaughter left her wallet in a 200 buck jacket that was stolen at college. New credit card was free, called that instantly, new driver's license was 35 bucks, only a couple of bucks in her wallet. Wife gave her one of her jackets to wear, that 450 bucks for the USCIS was a killer.

As long as you have the copies of the card, front and back, you're OK to file. The problem may come up when you do the biometrics. They did check my wife's green card when she did her biometrics. I'm not sure what they would have done had she failed to bring it, I if I recall correctly the biometrics appointment letter said to bring the green card. Bringing the photocopies and the police report might get you through that. I hope he does have other ID to still prove his identity.

Good luck on finding the actual card.

You said his ROC is due in a month and half, is that the beginning of the 90 day window you're required to file in?

Won't be able to ..... nor a job

You need to prove you're eligible to work, but an employer cannot require you to show your green card to show you're eligible. There are other means such as showing your SS card without restrictions and a drivers license put together.

You can see the list of documents to prove eligibility here.

We found it!! It was under the passenger side seat of his car... neither of us know how it ended up there, but right now we're too happy to care! I'd already torn apart the house too, so now I have some reorganizing to do. But worth it :)

Thank you everyone for your help and advice, hopefully this thread can be useful to someone else in the future....

Good you found the GC -- so much less hassle now.
