Some were truthful. But, when you're tackling a subject like this, it's tricky to say the least when you're comparing tragedies. I get the point, but if I wrote a response to the check your privilege, I'd highlight more of the plights of the people before me. Because it's not really that bad right now for minorities,in contrast to what was going on 50 years ago. Like Chris Rock said, what black folks went through in the 60's was nice compared to what they went through in the 30's.

Sure, it is tricky, but authoring an essay with that kind of title and then having it published by a major magazine was just begging for a response (which is exactly whyTime published it - titilation). It would have been different had the student specifically responded to someone else's statements on white male privilege, but he chose a generalization and oversimplification of what that term means and then proceeded to make it sound like anyone who has ever addressed the subject as a real problem are undefensable. Dex used his own personal experience - like being held at gunpoint by the police. Certainly, he comes across as a bit blunt when making his points, but I thought he succeeded without destroying that student's ego.

I've been a victim of police brutality myself. It's nothing to sneeze at. Here's the issue, when you tackle something like this, there's a finesse you need to use. Being blunt and in your face might work for those of us who know what time it is, but for the rest of the population, you alienate them.

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

Don't you guys ever get tired of talking about race? Specifically black/white. Why don't we ever talk about hispanic or asian racism?

Asians are counted among the special 'privileged' races, like whitey.

This is a very serious issue today. You are in a lot more danger from some roided up band of cops, playing army guy and busting your door down in the middle of the night, because they went to the wrong house, than you are from any street criminals.

Your dog should be afraid also. Apparently, cops number one hobby after tazing granny and roughing up grandpa, is shooting the family pet.

The original article was written to make the point that everybody can play the victim card if they look around a bit in their past. It's fairly difficult to compare victimization and by extension it's difficult to compare privilege. So when the response starts out by trying to one up the victimization, he does nothing but prove the point of the original author.

I count Hispanics in with us. They're just a different tier of racial injustice. Asians, not so much. They have the advantage of the automatic assumption of them being better than the average person.

Sure, anything to pad the numbers.

Hell yeah, it's hard out here for a radical protester. When racism goes away, that means I have to go out and get a real job :crying:

Its gonna be a fun day when whites and blacks get to be minorities together.

Yep, I'm throwing the BBQ at my house, just bring the drinks. :dancing:

Pigs and cows are offended by the abbreviation BBQ, you need to spell out the word barbecue from now on.

Everything follows the race pecking order.

Whenever a form asks for race, I always check "other". We others are so far down the pecking order, nobody even notices us. We don't even have a real name. Nobody ever want's to hear about us.

If I try to talk about the problems we face as others, I'm usually just met with blank stares or nervous expressions. It's like we don't even exist.

I really don't like my race being portrayed that way.
