Hi,

I'm Canadian and my fiance (born in the US and lives there as well) and I aren't entirely sure where to start. We're not sure how to go about applying for a marriage license. We've looked at the Michigan State website and they merely state routes for those who are in-state residents and out of state residends. There's nothing for how to go about applying for a marriage license if one party is from a different country.

Does anyone know where we could start? It's quite daunting, we didn't realize that it would be so much work.

Thanks so much

S and D :)

First you need to get your fiance over here on a K-1 visa before you can apply for that marriage license.

Hello,

It will be a few months (and lots of paperwork) until your fiancé can be here and you can apply for the marriage license... :( The VJ guides are really helpful to get you started and collect all the paperwork you will need to appy for the K-1 ;)

Good luck and welcome to VJ!!

S and D,

Start with the clerk at the government office in his area where marriage licenses are issued.

Be prepared to initially get the same information you found on the web site, since that's the most common situation they deal with. Then be patient while they figure out how to deal with the situation where one of the parties is an alien.

You have two options. Get a K1 visa and marry after entering on a K1. Or get married first, go back to Canada and apply for a K3 or CR-1/IR-1 visa.

As for a marriage license, call the county clerk's office and ask them to clarify. Every state and county have their own requirements for obtaining a marriage license.
