I'm an idiot and forgot to send the check with the application I mailed off this morning. Should I (a) send in the check with a cover letter explaining what happened, (B) send in the check with a whole new set of application materials, or © wait for them to contact us about it? We still have about 80 days left until my wife's deadline.

By the way, does anybody else think it is horribly wrong and illogical that they make you pay for the biometrics service before your petition is approved? I don't think we will be denied, but what if someone was? Do they just keep the money to cover the cost of the biometrics they would have had to perform had they actually accepted the application? Do they refund some or all of the money? Questions like these are what distracted me and led to the mess I'm in now.

Wait for them to return your package, they will return it before you can send the check. They will just cross in the mail.

They need to finger print for the security check, they need to complete a security check before they can approve a green card, that is what the biometrics is all about.

You have plenty of time to wait for them to return your package for payment.

In your case, how long did it take to receive a reply? Were all of the forms returned and all you had to do was put in the check?
They just return the package with a note about the payment not in the envelope and required. Or they may send an RFE for the chack.

Similar thing happened last month to another person, they sent a check for correct amount $275, but they thought $205 and sent the whole package back.

In case you used the USPS, run immediately to the post office and do a recall on your package. If you are on time, they even return the money. run run, I did it on December!

It took me seven minutes of wandering through the phone menus before I found a human being, but I called and talked to an agent today (01/12/07), who said:

(1) Do not send the check separately because they will not be able to put it with the application. I suggested adding a cover letter with the A# and an explanation, but she said it wouldn't do any good.

(2) I could wait for them to send the entire application back, which might take about 30 days, and then send in the check with it. She said she thought it might even come sooner since I was missing the check, but she didn't know.

(3) Submit a new application with the check.

Frustratingly, the agent said there is no way to contact the processing center directly, and if I wait and nothing comes, I should call again and they would "try" to put me in touch with somebody who could help. That sounds awful, so I am going to do #3. I have copies of everything and the new and improved form saves information you enter, so I just have to print it out, sign it, and send it. The agent said it would not cause any problems to send the new application, even if I haven't heard anything yet about the first one.

And, as K1Spain suggested, when I go down to the post office I will try to do a recall on the first application I sent out. Thanks for all of your help!

Well, I just did the same thing this morning, I guess recalling the mail is not an option in our case. How did option 3 turn out for you? Did you receive the original package you sent? If so how long did it take you to receive the package?

Thanks a lot!

Option 3 turned out well. We received our original package back (from the Nebraska center) just a couple of days after we sent in the second one--maybe it took a week for them to get it back to us? A couple of weeks later we had an appointment for the biometrics. We went there (Kansas City) last Wednesday, so now we are waiting to hear what is next.

Advice about the biometrics: Go early and stand at the window. They scheduled all of us at the same time (8:00 AM), and then everybody rushed up to the window when it opened so that latecomers actually got in line ahead of people that had been there for a while. It took about an hour (we were number 9), so I recommend bringing a book.

THANK YOU!

I really appreciate your response. I guess I will wait for the petition I sent, and then put the check in and send it back. I am in the beginning of the 90 day period so I believe we have a lot of time. I checked it online and they received it yesterday.

Also thanks a lot for the information about Kansas City, I will be using the same center, and will get in the line early.

Thanks again.

Alright! Just received the package today, I am very impressed how quickly they sent it back (less than a week).

I will send in the packet back tomorrow, this time with the check. :)
