Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (D), a former Republican, said racism is a "big reason" why he left the GOP.

Crist told Fusion's Jorge Ramos the GOP is now seen as "anti-women, anti-minority, anti-women, anti-gay, anti-education, anti-environment," saying he left the Republican Party because leadership "went off a cliff."

When Ramos suggested "the moment" Crist decided to leave the Republican party was when he realized he'd lose to now-Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in the 2010 Senate race, Crist denied the claim, blaming the GOP's attitude toward working with President Barack Obama instead.

"I couldn't be consistent with myself, and my core beliefs, and stay with a party that was so unfriendly toward the African-American president. I'll just go there," Crist said, saying anti-Obama "activists" were "intolerable."

"I couldn't take it anymore," Crist added.

They (R politicians) don't hate him because he is black any more than they hated Kennedy because he was fat or Barney Frank because he was gay (well. umm.. lets not go there)... They hate him because he is a Democrat.

Though I imagine they do hate the fact that he is black because of the extra landmines and hyper interpretation paid to any negative speech regarding him.

There are some things that can only be contributed to his skin color. The birther movement, the Tea Party(kind of), the way some politicians react to him.

Those type of people exists so you have to be correct - we could argue forever as to the extent. I believe they are a small minority and most of the current "hatred" is due to the current climate between the parties and winning being more important than any specific political philosophy.

none of those can be attributed to dear leaders race. the constant accusations of racism and general douchiness he & his supporters display have contributed to the dislike of Obama and his policies.

On this we agree. It appears that the current political landscape has become so charged that nothing either side does can placate the other.

Some things that have happened can be attributed to racism, others to being a Democrat.

Since Mr Obama took office, the rate of threats against the president has increased 400 per cent from the 3,000 a year or so under President George W. Bush, according to Ronald Kessler, author of In the President's Secret Service.

Some threats to Mr Obama, whose Secret Service codename is Renegade, have been publicised, including an alleged plot by white supremacists in Tennessee late last year to rob a gun store, shoot 88 black people, decapitate another 14 and then assassinate the first black president in American history.

Maybe it's because he's a Democrat.

But there is a huge difference between being a white supremacist who wants to kill the President and being a person who joined the tea party because you think the gov't spends too much.

And I agree, but here's the difference.

The Tea Party was formed in 2006. Government spending was out of control. Where was the protests? Where was the outrage? At that time, things were going downhill fast. Jobs were gone, folks were unemployed. Late 2008 would have been a perfect time to hit the pavement. Yet, though all of that, there was no sound, no mention of them. Their very first protest, Feb 2009. A month after Obama took office. What kind of change were you hoping for 30 days in?

Edit: This could be because he's a Democrat, wouldn't put that past. But it's weird all this hoopla was absent when we were in the thick of it before Obama took office.

You can dislike his policies, there are some I don't agree with. But if you're calling him a monkey, or disrespecting his family and children every chance you get, then we have a problem.
