This is directly from the US Embassy website in Canberra for immigrant visa's.

What type of Australian police check is required?

Depending on which Australian state or territory in which you reside will depend on how to apply for the Australian police certificate.

You only need to apply for 1 Australian police certificate and it can be based on a name or fingerprint check.

A police check based on name check only must contain all aliases previously and presently used. Failure to provide a name check certificate with all aliases may result in the consular officer refusing your application for a police certificate based on a fingerprint check.

I submitted my application with only a name check which was far cheaper than the fingerprint check and my case was approved. (K1)

Hi TheCaptain.

I ended up getting a name and fingerprint check from the AFP. Thanks for your help!

Question: Did you submit just your original police certificate, original + photocopy, or just photocopy? The NVC site says submit photocopy, the rep on phone last night says just send original. Confused again!

Cheers.

PS: the whole process seems to be flowing rather nicely.

Because my spouse is from QLD, no Police Certificate was submitted to NVC. The Embassy received the original directly from the Queensland Police.

Please be aware that the US Consulate/Embassy websites are not always up-to-date. And neither is the Adjudicator's Manual from NVC.

BigO - if it were me, I would submit the original AND a photocopy of your police cert to NVC, and keep a photocopy (or three) for yourself.

My husband had his sent directly to him. We're in QLD. We're about to send the packs and wanna make sure we've done it right. Should we have another one sent to the Consulate or is it okay that we send a copy to NVC and none is being sent to consulate?

@TheBigO...looks like you maybe had yours sent to you and you submitted to NVC...was that okay?

I think you may have to check if you are required to now only send in the photocopy and take the original to the embassy for the interview. The process changed on November 12.

Ah, right. I meant that some people say it's required that the copy be sent directly to the consulate vs. being sent to you and you sending a copy to NVC
