First, the two things are not comparable. If he had said that he was sending all the white kids home in body bags....then we would have something comparable.

Second, from what I've read, the basketball owner had been a known racist for a very long time. So maybe he had already been pulled aside. It seems he didn't choose his words better and he got what he deserved.

I remember a thread some time ago about a guy who confronted KKK members in a positive way and changed many of their views.. He has a collection of KKK uniforms in his home from former members who have turned away from the Klan. People can be reached if approached correctly. This professor has a captive audience for several months and blows it on day one.

If I was his boss I would try to have that conversation.. I'm not as good as the KKK confronter, I doubt I could break through the protective self-righteous shield.

I don't think it can work in this forum because even if you approach someone in a listen-understand-repeat-share mode there is usually that next post that poisons the atmosphere and puts the extremists back into their respective corners and into blast-my-message mode.

I'm going to assume that most don't know who Brian McLaren is. He's a Christian pastor and author. Some of the things he's said has him labeled as a heretic by some; but he does have a very interesting approach to Christianity.

I bring this up because his approach to spreading the word of God is not to go out and constantly preach at people. His approach is just conversations. In his words:

If you are willing to get out, reach out, relate to and willing to be a neighbour, a friend a decent human being, then you are more ready than you realize. You don't start by being religious; you start by being human, relational, neighbourly and friendly. As you meet people you will ask some questions, conversations will begin and a relationships will develop. Don't worry about the content of the conversations. Just get them going and see what happens.

I just think it kind applies to what Marvin and OMWID are saying. You can have an effect on people without trying so hard; just be a good person.
