Is my Fiancee going to get the third degree while going through customs in Accra and boarding the flight with Delta for having a one way ticket to JFK with a Fiance Visa? Do they expect one way ticket passengers to have a green card? Will the customs officers confuse the expiration date of the fiancee visa with the expiration of the passport or as the expiration of the visa stay in the US? I provided a link to an experience a member had where the Delta attendant refused to let someone board the plane without letting them open their sealed envelope before boarding the plane. The attendant opened the envelope and then the guy had to fight with the Delta attendants to call the JFK port of entry to explain their error.

What should she do if she is faced with a similar situation where the delta official or Ghana customs officer demands to open her sealed envelope before admitting her on the plane? Also she will be traveling with only two hepatitis B shots and she will get the 3rd in the US, I'm under the understanding that that's ok?

This will be my Fiancee's second time flying and her first time flying international. She'll also be going it alone unfortunately due to the cost of the ticket and our wedding expenses. We have familiarized ourselves with the JFK reviews but more concerned about confusion at Accra.

This is ridiculous. The airline has no right to do that. Delta was a such headache when they tried to switch our flights by saying the other connecting flight that operated by different airline do not accept pets. Print the requirements that only an immigration officer allow to open yellow envelope.

Also armed your fiancé with cellphone or something. When Delta tried to do the silly things I had to call Silver Airways to confirm via my Skype subscription ( thankfully wireless internet was everywhere at the airport in South Korea). Put important number on the cellphone - maybe the US embassy phone- or immigration line at JFK airport.

I also only have had 2 shots from 3 series of Hepatitis B so she should be fine. Just tell them, if they are trying to open the yellow envelope and their faces will appear on the newspapers to showing how unskilled they are.

One way ticket is fine. Your fiancee's visa is an indication that she has an intent to immigrate so she can tell off the check-in counter clerk if in case they ask silly questions.

No worries on the missing 3rd shot for the Hepa B vaccine.

Tell your fiancee that she has nothing to worry about and she can always ask people in the airport for directions. She must be really excited for her first international flight and then seeing you again! To her, safe travels and very very soon, welcome to America! :dancing:

Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious, but how in the world did the attendants know about the envelope & his immigration status? From the visa in the passport? If you're flying out of your home country, how would they know about the visa stamp? Do they flip through all the pages? I'm just confused about how something like this happens. I didn't realize it was possible so I would like a little more info to be able to warn my fiancé' fully that its happened & how it ended up happening. This is just crazy..

Check-in clerks are (normally) given training on checking if a certain citizen of a country needs a visa to travel to a particular country. American passport holders are lucky in this sense, as they are allowed to travel without going through a visa application process. But there are still some countries that will require Americans to apply for a visa, like China, for example.

In OP's case, and most people migrating to US, the check-in counter clerk should be able to see the type of visa affixed on the passport. International travels will require a passenger to provide the passport upon check-in. The clerk will go through each page to look for that visa.

What happened on OP's link was unacceptable, and I'm sure that airport is now informed of this mistake.

Airlines routinely inspect passports, entry documents and/or visas for passengers boarding their flights. The US applies a stiff penaltiy to an airline for bringing a passenger to a US POE without proper documentation for entry.

However, opening the sealed envelope was completely wrong. As noted earlier, it would probably be best to travel with the sealed envelope in a secure part of one's bag until the US POE. The visa in the passport should be sufficient to meet the airline's requirements for boarding.

Okay that makes sense. Just never thought about it I guess because I'm a US citizen. I will warn him of this just to be safe. Thank y'all (:

Thank you everyone. I feel bad for that member who had that experience. I found that in my search and thought I'd make sure nobody else had similar experiences. She will be traveling with her cell phone, sealed envelopes stored inside her carry on luggage, and a print out of the k1 process just in case she runs into someone unfamiliar with what it is.
