Some says they do another background check for the petitioner and beneficiary , and other says they only process payments and act like a bridge from USCIS to local embassy....

In most cases with the K-1 they are just that bridge, but they can do background checks and put your case into administrative processing. Does not usually happen though. Normally within 45 days or so the file is on its way to the embassy.

From the DOS FAQs:

  • After USCIS approves the petition, it is sent to the National Visa Center (NVC). The NVC will give you a case number and send your petition to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where your fiancé(e) lives.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)

Most of times, NVC is a transit place for files before forwarded to listed consulate. At NVC, a file will assigned with a case number and you will use the case number to communicate with the embassy. USCIS do background checks to a petitioner before approved the I-129F. There are some cases where the approved petition is stay longer for administrate processing at NVC. But it is normal. It means, they double checked your papers before sent to the embassy where the beneficiary will have the interview.

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Just my experience, the NVC is just a "bridge" as other posters have stated. I think the NVC step is just to verify that everything is in order... For example, for me anyways, my K1 petition was received and passed by the NVC on the same day. I hope this helps try to explain the process.

Best of luck!

From the K-1 perspective it is just a short stop to get the embassy case number affix and send on to the embassy. NVC does review the file (I know of a few that were caught with issues).

You can call NVC to inquire about the case number. This is the number we used before: (603) 334 0700

Other NVC contact details here: http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/nvc/nvc-contact-information.html

Do inquire only after about 10 business days from NOA2 , as it still needs some time for your case files to be transferred and processed. You should also be able to receive a letter from NVC in about 2-3 weeks from NOA2 date, informing you of the case number and that your files will be transferred to the consulate where the beneficiary will be interviewed.

Either way. You can call NVC to get your case number or wait the mail showed up in petitioner's mailbox. Many people on VJ called NVC to get their case number so they can move forward to the next process and it saved up a lot of time.

That's awesome! You can give them a call or send them an email inquiring for the MNL# in about 2 weeks.

Here's one done by our kabayan in following-up with NVC: http://www.mrspresson.com/immigration/129f-fiancee-petition-process/nvc-ceac-status-tracker/

When you got the MNL#, you can go ahead and pay for your visa application fee. I hope you have checked out any of the blogs below, written especially for K1s from PH:
