Kids in Japan go through torture. Cram schools 4-5 days a week after public school and club activities . They are never out of their uniform. No time for free thinking.

I saw lots of kids in Hong Kong, in their school attire, on the subway around 10pm. I assumed heading home. There's lots of after school tudoring and clubs (academic clubs). Very competitive.

and we tell our boys that they are not to use the children around here as examples of their competition. The USA performs very poorly against the other industrialized nations in Science, Math and English. Increasingly we are in a global economy and world labor market where their competition is in Japan, Germany, Hong Kong, etc. We know who our competition is, and it isn't the kids around here.

Not entirely true. AJ posted an article comparing, basically the rich private school kids in the us to the rest of the world. They faired much much better. Still shows the inequality here though.
