Sorry I wasn't trying to be quaint. I was writing on my phone right before bed. I remember you used to dominate the Effects forum. I hated trying to give advice after you.

Glad to see you're pushing your children to reach their potential.

I was sincerely thanking you. Sorry it came off differently. I don't understand how, but apologize nevertheless.

We really wanted to share with other people how you can educate your children so much earlier so that other parents who want a bright future for their children can do it too. But people get awfully defensive and go on the attack.

We have developed our own routine and I have never written down how it goes, so I am going to do so here with the sciences. The sun is the grandest item in our world so it all starts with the sun. We branched in two directions from the sun. First, the small-particle direction with the sun being made of hydrogen and helium. We say it is "burning", which is not precisely correct but sufficient for this level. Those are the first two elements in the Periodic Table of the Elements, so off we go there. The second direction is the large body science of the solar system, comets, asteroids, etc.

At the same time, Christmas is not Santa Clause and Jesus. It is the winter solstice. I don't recall ever using the term Easter with them. It is the Equinox. We do tell them that other people have these traditions and do not understand how the solar system works because they are busy concealing science beneath myth. They are told not to make fun of other people for this, and to respect their beliefs even if they are silly. But it could not be clearer to me how these traditions have impeded the understanding of science.

I do a lesson which they then report to their mother. So for example we set up a lamp in the middle of the floor as the sun and use a globe to demonstrate the earth spinning on its axis and revolving about the sun. It is very easy to see why we have winter and summer when you do that because the earth is tilted on its axis and the lamp shows how much less sun their is in the winter. The spelling/reading/writing is all consistent with the science education of the day so for example yesterday:

The earth spins on its axis.

One day is one revolution.

The earth orbits the sun.

In summer, we are pointed at the sun.

In winter, we are pointed away.

To us this seems so logical and powerful. A day is one revolution of the earth. A month is one orbit of the moon. A year is one orbit of the sun. Lessons from the day before are repeated at the start of the next day. We can come back later to something that is too deep for them and discuss it at a higher level of understanding.

When I tried to demonstrate what we were doing I emphasized that I did not think our kids are brilliant. Anyone can be teaching what the solstice is instead of having kids memorize the names of different imaginary flying reindeer. And the science is more exciting if you ask me, what with black holes, parallel universes, the big bang and all...

Penny got a month long suspension for saying someone was using a sock puppet account. Yes, seriously.

She will likely not be returning.

Mostly, that sucks.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I used to follow you back then. I thought you were pointing out how folks don't react positively when you talk about that subject. It was my mistake.

Well, generally they don't. I read a good piece by Dr. Karen Adolph out of NYU on that. She was discussing how people from different cultures are horrified by how other cultures raise their children. After reading her book chapter on that I realized this is exactly the same thing we faced when trying to tell others that you can start so much earlier. Swimming and walking at just a few weeks old, for example.

The dominant culture here in the USA is reliance upon the public school system and this pervasive attitude of children needing this galaxy of make-believe instead of science. Anything different from the dominant culture suffers from this phenomenon that Dr. Adolph wrote of. It was a surprise to us though how vicious and malicious people can be - to the point of trying to have our children taken away from us and me put in jail.

That's horrible. I'm glad you're somewhere now where you don't have to deal with that #######. Been moving around for the last 20 years, it's amazing how little and petty people can be.

I was an early reader too (18 months), and I am forever grateful to my parents for encouraging and challenging me as I grew older, and never preventing me from accessing reading material that was "too old." If I didn't like it, I'd stop reading it. This did mean I was the only 4-year-old reading John Cheever in my neighbourhood.

She is a "habitual offender" ... it's very serious.

Too bad this thread will die a quick death.

Shame

Notice how you used the word "encourage", whereas the detractors always say "push", and clearly in a pejorative way. Anyone who does more than your own child was "pushed" (abused), and your own child was merely "taught". The corollary to that is saying a child that learns before your own was "not ready". The magical moment of "ready" is whatever day your own child learned it. We forced our children to learn the alphabet, whereas theirs learned by osmosis or something magically benign.

If anything, I pushed them! By all accounts I verged on exhausting when it came to eagerness to learn as much as I could and as quickly as I could. My parents also learned how to step back and let me lead them when it came to the schedule I was ready for. Yes, they did get a lot of flack for "pushing" me from people who didn't understand their pedagogy was largely child-led (to the extent that I was the one who got to say "enough"). But as the kids say, haters gonna hate.
