NEW YORK (AP) — MSNBC is apologizing for a Cinco de Mayo segment that featured a staff member onscreen wearing a sombrero, shaking maracas and taking a swig from a bottle of tequila.

The network said Tuesday the interlude on its "Way Too Early" show Monday featuring correspondent Louis Burgdorf and host Thomas Roberts wasn't intended to be disrespectful. The show apologized online and will express its regret Wednesday on the air.

Hugo Balta, president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, says it was abominable that the segment was done by a news organization. He says it feeds "the ignorant misconceptions of a rich and proud people who unfortunately are too often portrayed as caricatures to be scoffed at."

The holiday marks an 1862 battle victory by Mexican troops. It is celebrated in the U.S. with parades and revelry.

I remember hearing a while back that there were some Italians who were offended that most of the Italian roles in movies were portrayed as gangsters and they wanted to put an end to it. Being 1/2 Italian, that offended me.

er.. that's exactly what we were doing (technically I was playing a Mexican-flag colored fish Guiro and drinking Rum) and our group had four Colombians (what's cinco de .. hey! booze!), 10 Mexicans, and a Bolivian.

I want to get this right - Which of our group needs to apologize and which of us need to be offended? Please let me know I need to send out the I-am-sorry/hey-you-need-to-apologize emails while it still is appropriate.

I think the way it works is that everyone is supposed to be offended and no one apologizes.
