Hello everyone!

I just checked my entry and I found out that I was selected for the diversity visa!

I’ve searched the internet looking for more info but it’s so overwhelming so I decided to just ask a few questions if that’s ok:

- On the page it said that I will be needing to fill the DS-260 form on the 19th May, do I need to have all the legal documents that they ask or is it just a simple form to update my selection?

- Another question that came up was, I was reading a lot about people asking for their chance with the high case number, is there an order for people to get called to the interview, or is it based on who submits the DS-260 form first?

- In the case that we get called for the interview based on the case number, do you think I have any chance of getting called by having the number EU23***? I’m from Portugal if that helps in any way.

- The last question is, I was planning to get married later this year, but from my understanding the DS-260 form will allow me to include my future wife on my diversity visa, does that mean I have to get married until May 19th?

I’m really sorry, I tried to search this stuff but it’s just too overwhelming for now.

Cheers

The first question I think it is just the form but others will chime in the proof are needed for the interview. You are called in order of your case number the last numbers being the most important. Each area has it's own cut offs. If you marry before your interview your wife will come with you IF you can prove that you have a valid relationship some fraudsters marry to bring a friend over and that causes no one to travel. You look at the months visa bulletin to see the cut offs but your year doesn't start until October. All visas for that year must be issued by the end of the following year.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

You don't need the documents for filling in the form. You will need them for the interview. Please read the instructions for selectees (.link from your notification letter) carefully.

Interviews are based on case number order. Your case number is absolutely fine, I'm not an expert on EU numbers re estimating month of interview, but it is very safe.

You can fill in your DS now, or wait till you have married. If you fill it in now you will need to update it when you get married. Bear in mind you will need to fill in DS260 for your wife as well when she is your wife.

As mentioned they will be on high alert for "green card marriages". Be sure to take proof of a bona fide relationship along to the interview. Lots of info on this if you do a search.

Oh and congrats on both the selection and the future marriage!

Thanks for the great answers!

I'll be spending the next few weeks searching for everything that I can, and making sure I don't burn my brain out in the process!

Since I've searched already for the proof of a bona fide relationship, I'll leave a link that might interest to those who are searching for it:

http://www.***removed***/greencard/bona-fide-marriage-documentation.html

We're together for almost 10 years, so it shouldn't be a problem getting any of this info. :)

kengolive actually posted something that I also want to know, I worked as a freelance for a while, is there a way for us to put it in there?

Cheers!

This one

employer: self

job title: personal trainer

Or even just

employer: self-employed

job title: personal trainer

Remember the US loves self employed people... They like entrepreneurs, they like people who go out and earn for themselves without having to feel like they need an employer, they like the initiative it shows and the implication that you won't be a public charge!

Awesome! Thanks Susie!

Another question just came up, I was looking at the DS-260 form and they were asking for the last 5 addresses. I'm from Portugal but for the last couple of months I've been in the UK, and I'll probably stay here for the remaining visa process. Will that be a problem? I know that I'll have to get a police statement if I stay for longer than 12 months, but does it affect the visa process in any way knowing that the UK is not eligible for the diversity visa?

Cheers!

No, as far as eligibility is concerned, they don't care where you live or have lived, or what your nationality is or was, or what country your passport is issued from, etc etc. All they care about is that your country of chargeability is eligible, and in 99% of cases that is where you were born.

No problem with the consulate in the UK handling the processing either, plenty people with other chargeability but resident in the UK have had DV visas processed there.

Check on the if it is 6 months or 12 months for the police clearance the rules vary on that

Good point, iirc for your current country of residence you need a police certificate if you have been there 6 months or more (at the time of interview), for all past residences 12 months. Best check the guidelines on that!

I was searching on wikipedia for the DV to trying to learn more about it and I bumped into this sentence:

If passed, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 will abolish the program from fiscal year 2015.

Is this a real thing? Can this really happen or it's just a bill that's not gonna ever be passed?
