You can put them in your checked luggage if you are not afraid of them leaking and ruining your other items.

Hi.

Did your fiancé bring a lot of items, or just a few?.....mostly clothing items or others too?

Everything but the kitchen sink....

Have never seen so many shoes in my life, including a shoe store.I didn't think it was possible. She's taken over 4 of the 5 large closets in the house.

And since we travel quite a bit, every time we are nearby Poland, that means a detour for more things that are not easily found in the US, unless you are in NY, Chicago.

Seriously, it depends on what the plans are for visits to home country.

I brought two mid size suitcases, mostly clothes. In my carry on I had an entire tea service, that I was given by my elderly flatmate (it was her Mother's and never used). And a pocketbook.

Other than that, I went to NZ post, and mailed myself 5 boxes, things like books, and momentos, and things I knew were not going to be available here. No electronics, given the differences between the two places.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

So, I was AOS, but we did go back to Australia this past December when I had my GC to get my stuff. Since I was in the states for a year, most of my clothes had been replaced, so I really didn't take a whole lot. Electronics stayed, or were sold, unless they had some sort of significance (iPod). Vintage camera collection stayed in the hands of my parents until we go out again. Vintage couch stayed, too, until I come back with more time to sell it (trust me, it's a hard thing to sell things when you've family around. Priorities change.) The main thing I took was books. Lots and lots of books because I love to read, and at $15-50 a pop I decided to take as many as I could; we loaded four suitcases up. They couldn't exceed 70lbs each. All free because my husband is with the airline's reward program. Shipping from Australia was too much, so we killed two birds with one stone - a trip to see family, and to pack my stuff.

All my then fiance brought (now my husband, of course) was two suit cases and a carry on back pack, basically just clothes, his Play Station 3 (which he bought in the U.S. when he was visiting me, three years before we got married, but then took it to Finland with him) and laptop.

He had other items in Finland but they were left at his parents house. So then when his sister and half brother came to the U.S. to visit us a year after he moved, they brought some of his items over for him. And then the same thing happened when his mom and step dad came to visit over a year after that. And then he went to Finland last summer and brought more over. Makes it pretty easy when his family is willing to store his items and they can bring it over for him, or he can get them himself whenever he goes to Finland.

I flew over to get my hubby since I was required to be at the interview so I packed a carry-on size suitcase inside an empty large suitcase and then I had my large suitcase with my items and then my carry-on suitcase. So I essentially checked 2 bags and carried on 1 but only 1 of the 4 bags had my stuff in it and then he filled the rest. He brought clothes and shoes, some books/pictures, important medical and legal paperwork and that's it. He sold or gave away everything else.

Depending on the airline, if you are a member of their frequent flier program you can usually get at least the 1st checked bag free, sometimes 2 and if you have a credit card for that airline you can also get free or reduced prices on checked bags. It's worth it to look into!

Only cost me £1500 to ship that lot, would have cost a whole load more to buy it all again.

The only thing I have noticed cheaper in the US compared to the UK is petrol and bananas. Off hand cannot think of anything else.

Houses, cars, etc, etc.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

Clothes, most fruits, train tickets (omg train tickets), pipe tobacco, Waterford crystal, etc.

I think beef is cheaper, but it has been a few years since I've checked.

My British cousin wrote a blog post a couple of weeks ago about the many things they could afford in America, that they never could in England on the same salary. I concur.

Hi.

We shipped a large box of Olga's favorite Russian language books about a week before I went to get her. The books arrived about one week after we were all back in the US.

On the trip to the US, she brought some favorite clothes, family heirloom crystal and her jewlery. Her son brought a backpack full of his favorite toys - he was 9 at the time. Early on, we made the decision that everything else that she wanted / needed could be replaced in the US. Olga adapted to recreational / sport shopping in the US very well!

 so did my wife. When she lived in the Philippines she hated shopping. I asked her about this on one of her many forays into the malls here. Her answer was she did hate shopping there, because she didn't have the money to buy anything there

Houses cheaper!!! , not here, city taxes ridiculous, food in supermarkets, have you seen the price of a decent loaf of bread if you can find one. beer $6 dollars for a pint, comcast outrageous, cell phone tariffs, all far more expensive than UK. House insurance very expensive and lets not talk about health insurance. and having to tip 20% on top of any going out.

Do you realize that different states have different cost of living index? http://www.missourieconomy.org/indicators/cost_of_living/index.stm

In general, I do find most things (especially basic needs) are cheaper here in US than in Europe.
