Agreed with the rest, only advise your fiancee to bring stuff that he will have a hard time getting here. I have only brought 4 big luggages and a handbag, of mostly clothes that I bought in the past 2 years, personal electronic devices and important legal documents, and some dried mangoes ;). I have donated most of my clothes and other reusable stuff to family and friends.

Always remember that material things are always replaceable. Safe travels to your fiance! :)

I brought my bed + bedding to fit, rowing machine, cookware, cutlery, clothes, side tables, crockery, plenty of money as the US is very expensive (compared to UK anyway).

My then fiancee brought all her clothes, most of which she ended up sending back.

pictures of family and friends.

contact information for family and friends back home. mostly uses facebook now, but not everyone is on it.

mementos that are important to her.

Her wedding dress and a barong for me, for us to get married in.

Important paperwork - copies of her birth certificate, baptism certificate, confirmation certificate, all degrees and transcripts from high school and college.

She did not bring any electrical items, as they used 220 power there.

Her laptop and cellphone she gave to her sister. I have more than enough computers the house, and could easily get her a new smart phone. Plus it helps the family keep in touch with us here.

She wanted to bring her angel collection, but many are glass or porcelain and the shipping companies did not want to accept them. Plus she was worried about them getting broken. So they all sit in her sister's home yet, and she's started a new collection here.

That is what I was going to say and the shipping cost from the UK - prohibitive!

My husband brought one suitcase, mostly shoes and only good clothes.

Does anybody here bring personal stuff that only from the origin country? Cuz I'm using contact lenses n mostly m using liquid on it. N i got some meds n vitamins.

One thing I would have had my wife bring, is many of the lotions and personal items that are hard to obtain here in the USA. I thought for sure, yeah we got shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, facial creams and such here, but it took a long time to find the ones here that actually worked for her. Her deodorant we still import because she doesn't like her armpits turning dark and I don't think its even legal to sell the ones that keep that from happening in the USA.

Be careful of medicines, its not legal to bring in some, or a prescription is needed in the USA. For vitamins and supplements, look at the ingredients, most of what it used there is available here, if you look at the ingredients instead of some brand name we don't have here.

Oh and since you're in the Philippines, bring dried fish. What is available there is so much better than what you're going to find here. My sister in law sends a package of the stuff 3 or 4 times a year.

????

What does that mean

I believe it means things are not more expensive in the USA, plus you also need to pay shipping on those items.

My husband is planning on bringing one suitcase filled with clothes and a backpack (carry on) with important documents and his computer (which he bought here in the US while visiting and took with him to Brazil.)

Our kitties are already here in the US since they live with me and are eagerly awaiting "papai". (Sofia Isabella passed away on Feb 27th.. she was his favorite :( and will travel with him to the US in spirit. )

Agreed! I read somewhere, somebody even wants to bring 15kg (~33lbs) of coffee beans ... wow!

Btw, Caryh, where does your wife buy that deo? PM please. I brought over 5 pieces of what I'm used to from PH as well. starting to panic now with only 2 remaining.

Only cost me £1500 to ship that lot, would have cost a whole load more to buy it all again.

The only thing I have noticed cheaper in the US compared to the UK is petrol and bananas. Off hand cannot think of anything else.

So would you buy it in the UK if you knew you had to ship it here? I can understand not wanting to rebuy everything you already paid for.

I think a lot of what you'll pay for things in the USA depends on what store you buy from and where in the USA you are. Being in Minnesota, I can get designer named brand items at the Mall of America or go to the Albertville outlet mall. In the mall of America I can pay 200 bucks for an item, which I can also buy for 35 bucks at the outlet mall.
