Hi.

I am the beneficiary. When my then-fiancé ( my now husband) came to my interview and brought me back to the US, I had 5 large boxes, 3 big suitcases, and small one. Most of those were clothing, books, some of my personal items that I am afraid can't find in the US. Also, sweet soy sauce and some of Indonesian snacks, my iPad, my laptop, and a big picture frame, the gift from my co-workers. The most difficult part was bring my 2 cats because Indonesian government is very strict about quarantine. Edited by Girl from Celebes

My hubby(then fiancé) shipped his clothes, movies, comic books and a few personal items before he came. He sold his CDs and DVDs because they wouldn't work here. So pretty much almost a month before he moved here it looked like he lived here :)

I'm glad you could bring your cats! Our cat lives with me so no long distance travels for her! :)

The important thing is to bring the college/school transcript with its translation to be used for applying a job here once the work permit/green card received.

Great! Yes, we are mostly concerned with the paperwork and items we really NEED, like documents and such.

The reason we are asking is because he wants to travel with as least as possible. Items are replaceable, and he's already got some clothing here from previous trips.

Also, the 10 pound baggage restriction of checked luggage is weighing us down....pun intended

Mine is not here yet, but we pretty mch agrees on what she wil lbring.

1. All of her clothing unless it is worn and unusable. Clothing is expensive in New York.

2. All personal effects. THey are expensive too and don't take much room in her suitcase.

3. Her cellphone. All she needs is a ndw charger. but not every cellphone works here, Hers does.

What will she leave behind?

1. Her hair dryer. It works on 220. It won't work here in the US, and a 110 to 200 step up transformer costs more than a new hairdryer.

2. Her laptop. Although it will work fine here, she is donating it to her family since they need one. I have both a desktop and a laptop here so she does not really need hers. She bought it primarily so we can skype.

What does she not have but would have left behind if she did have them:

1. Furniture. Cost prohibitive to ship, besides I already have a house ful of it.

2. Cookware. Same reasoning as furniture.

3. Television: Same reasong as furnture and cookware; also the 220 to 110 electricty issue.

So is everyone mostly shipping stuff before your significant other arrives?

I work at goodwill, so we have plenty of cheap (good quality) clothing to replenish what he leaves behind. We are pretty set on having his carryon, and one checked bag of clothing he DOES wear and his few necessities.

Yes, it is. I am glad your cat doesn't have to deal with long flights like my cats had ( 23 hours excluding layovers about 7 hours in total). It was very exhausted for my husband and I but at the end actually it worth.

My husband and I wanted to use shipping company but after compared the price finally we chose to pay airlines for excess baggage including my cats. It was cheaper and arrived at same time with us. Another word, my stuff came along with me in the US.

I shipped about 10 big boxes and a couple of smaller ones to the U.S. via DHL (mostly books, clothes and personal souvenirs). I also brought 4 big suitcases with me when I came here (I came by cruise ship, so there were no baggage restrictions and I could take it all for free).

I double LmmL's post - don't forget to bring all important documents such as college transcripts etc.

Hi.

Did your fiancé bring a lot of items, or just a few?.....mostly clothing items or others too?

When I came here last year, I brought 1 big suitcase. Initially, I would have bring 5 big suitcases containing my art materials, bags, shoes, books, clothes, documents, my collections of tweety bird stuff toys, edible food from the Philippines lol.. However, my then fiancee who is my husband now, told me to bring only the necessary stuff (especially my birth cert, transcript, diploma and certificates) so we won't be paying much for the excess baggage which is $400 based on our calculations as I have to travel from Davao to Manila, then Manila to Chicago. He said that everything I need like warm clothes, shoes and art materials we'll just buy it here. So, I ended up bringing a few clothes and shoes, one tweety bird stuff toy, my journals and all the necessary documents.
