Hi gang,

I own a wedding photography business in Canada and am hoping to finally make the move to the US next year when our K1 or Cr1 comes through. We're still trying to figure out what our best route is at this points in regards to which method.. but, regardless I hope to move to the US by end of summer or fall next year if all goes as planned. I'm wondering how that works with a small business. Can I just move my business over to the US? I will be shooting the majority of my weddings in the summer in Canada but am hoping to start booking weddings in the US for the winter months. I have an appointment with my accountant this week to inquire about how this would work.. but was curious if any of you have personal stories to share about either moving your business to the US or running a business in both countries --is this even possible?!

Thanks so much!

Your accountant will probably advise you to create a new business in the US.

A small international business is going to complicate your tax life.

Maintain or close the CA business. Start a new business in the US.

On the K-1, there will be 3-4 months where you can not work.

You may want to marry and file for the CR-1 which would allow you to work immediately upon entering the US.
