Hi! Great news is that I'm here in the USA with my new bride :) I arrived on the K-1 and we are now married.

I'm a little confused cos there is so much information about what to do next..

Do I need to wait for our marriage certificate to arrive in the mail before I can file for AoS/EaD?

Also, can I apply for an SSN straight away?

I need to open a bank account, but I can't without an SSN. Should I apply for an SSN now or a TID so I can open the bank account?

Thanks!

Yes, you need your certified marriage certificate for filed AoS. You can also apply SSN as soon as possible because you'll need it for some forms. I applied SSN before get married and arrived in mail a week later and on marriage license they ask my SSN. Here my experience regarding SSN.

You can apply for the SSN now. Print off your I-94 info and apply at your nearest SSA office > http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

You must include a copy of your marriage certificate when applying for AOS, so you need to get that from the court first.

An SSN is not needed for AOS or to get married. Yes, the marriage license will ask for an SSN, but a non-resident without one is not required to provide one in order to get married. They typically use your passport info instead.

Yes, you will need your marriage certificate to apply for AOS, EAD and AP, when you download the form I-485, it will tell you all documents you need to include with your application, however, SSN is not necessary, if you have SSN number, then put it on the forms, if not, does not matter, if you have less than 2 weeks on your I-94, they will not give you SSN, have to wait till you receive EADand AP, then apply for SSN.

Should not need an SSN for a bank account, I opened 2 without one.

Some banks require it, some do not. Go to one that doesn't.

SSN

I have been with wife to SSA office, and they refused to issue a SSN, saying you need a green card first. USCIS said "you only need proof of receipt of I-485 package as it stops the clock, but SSA is a different dept, we haven't heard anything about the refusing to issue SSN's"...

Bank Account

Have tried to add wife to an account so she can have her own ATM card, credit card, etc, the bank said no account or addition to existing account without a SSN...I asked if this was just their policy at this institution, and they said "No, it's ALL banks, a Patriot Act requirement"

Driver Learner Permit

Tried to go take the driver written test and get a California State Identification Card.... Unable as the I-94 is flagged as less than 60 days remaining in USA, so test and ID denied also.....

Why do I keep reading on various sites including VJ that all these things you need for I-485 are even available?

Whoever you talked to at the SSA and USCIS both have no clue what they are talking about. A K-1 entrant cannot get an SSN if there is less than 2 weeks validity left on their I-94, but they do not have to wait for the green card. They can get an SSN with their EAD. You cannot use the I-485 receipt to get an SSN, and it has nothing to do with stopping your overstay clock. They need an official government ID showing their legal status in the US and that they are eligible for an SSN. The I-485 receipt does not do that.

Some banks let you and some do not. You would need to find a bank that will, if you cannot wait for the SSN.

Most states will not allow you to receive a license or state ID without at least having an EAD first

None of those things are needed for filing the I-485 for adjustment of status along with the I-765 and I-131 for EAD/AP.
