Who came up with the 41% out of work statement?

That graph only shows people collecting unemployment. The number of people not working is much, much higher than that.

What percentage of that 41% are disabled or retired?

Probably a lot. Over half I would think. There are people that are disabled and retired that still work though. My mom collects disability and works, even though she is over 65. They limit the amount of money you can make though I think Apparently you get more money on disability than you do with the garden variety social security.

Well, just in my neighborhood the immediate 18 families around mine - only two are double income couples; 14 choose to have one parent at home to care for the children full time, 1 is a single parent who works, and 1 where the non-working spouse is disabled and cannot work. I guess he is represented in that 41% BS as well.

I've two nephews in graduate school ... they don't work yet, though they are of working age.

I've friends who decided not to have children and have retired at 51/50yo - they live happily in a cabin in northern Maine, don't work and I'm willing to bet have never developed your taste for trash can quisine.

There's on 'old' saying on the interwebs: "The plural of 'anecdote' isn't 'data'". Stories are just that: stories.

The only negligible figure seems to be those that share your opinion.

Meh.

Or in school. It's outrageous, isn't it, that 2 out of 3 16-19 year olds are not in the labor force. Lazy bums.

They should make them work the minute they turn 10 years old. All they do is sit around and play video games all day anyway. Children are useless.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics; same source as your link, but this is the correct graph. You're welcome.

As you can see, this is the seasonally-adjusted employment to population chart.

latest_numbers_LNS12300000_2004_2014_all

So the employment to population ratio has decreased about a percent and a half since Obama took office? That's what you're all worked up about? In 2009, baby boomers were between 45 and 63 years old. Now, they're 50-68 years old. And ten years down the road, they'll be 60-78 years old. What do you think that shift will do for the employment to population ratio in the decade to come? I can tell you that it certainly won't improve it. And that is true even if the unemployment rate goes down to the 4% or so mark that's usually considered full employment.

Again, the workforce participation rate of the 55+ crowd is less than half that of the 25-54 crowd. Increase their share of the population - and that's not only happening but that train cannot be stopped - and the employment to population ratio has only one way to go - down.

I many many many cases, it makes more economic sense for one of the parents to be a stay at home mom/dad. It even falls under conservative values.

Shh! When it comes to the economy and blaming Obama, all citizens must report to work or else! Commies rule!
