Good morning everyone,

So me and wife (she is from US) got married,I applied for the AOS (plus EA and AP).

I recently received my EA and AP in a combo card, plus a letter saying that "our application is a potential interview waiver case".

I don't really understand what it means but I do not care as long as I can work. (If you know what it means please let me know :) )

My question is... I never applied for a SSN because I red that thu USCS would give me one during the process... Should I apply now that I have a combo card with my EA and AP?

Thanks.

When your I-94form expires, you can no longer apply for SSN until such time you have the greencard.

Still it varies from state to state, California does not allow application with i-94 expired when your a k1 visa holder.

USCIS won't give SSN during the process, you need to apply for it separately.

Check your I-94, if you have 3 weeks before it expires, go and get an SSN asap.

hi

not true, since you have your EAD, work permit, you should file now for your SSN

once you have your interview, you will have to wait for the GC because the EAD won't be valid anymore

Thank you.

So which documents do I need to present at the SSO? Only my passport, my combocard (EA and AP) and the SSN application?

If your I-94 has less than 2 weeks validity left, then you cannot use the I-94 to apply for an SSN. However, you do not have to wait for the green card. You can get an SSN using your EAD. You cannot work without both the EAD and an SSN, so the EAD would be pointless if you were not allowed to get an SSN once you had an EAD. After the green card is approved, the EAD is no longer valid or needed and you can update your status with the SSA and have the stipulation removed that is printed on the SSN about needing DHS authorization to work because once you are a permanent resident, no separate work authorization is needed.

Also, getting an SSN does not vary from state to state. The SSN is federal/nationwide, not state-based.

Thank you.

Yes, that should be all, but take your marriage certificate too, just in case they want to see it as well.

And to answer your other question from your first post, having a potential waiver case means you will most likely be approved for the green card without an interview.

~ Moved from AOS from Family Based Visas to Social Security Numbers - topic mainly about applying for SSN ~
