Exactly how honest to be?

I've posted this in the regional branch as well but there's move volume here so I wanted to ask you all as well...

Okay I'll be direct and to the point... she as worked in a massage place. I'm not talking about the spa at the Four Seasons but at a Japanese Massage place called Akane in Bangkok. It's not like she's a registered sex worker or anything but this place isn't Wat Pho if you know what I mean.

Should she list it or not. It's her most recent job and is more than 1 year. It's the only job anything like it. Some time at a medical clinic, the counter at a Dunkin Doughnuts that sort of thing. Now that we are together she no longer works at Akane and is going to office work interviews as I type this...

So there it is... how honest need we be?

She's 24, from Roi-et and went to Uni there for 2 years and got a certificate in computers so it's not like she got on the bus to Bangkok from Roi-et at 16 and went straight to work as a happy-ending massage girl. Like so many others after a few years of working really hard for maybe 10,000 baht a year she realized she could make that in a month (without having sex) at a place like Akane.

We've known each other for a year, I've meet the parents etc...

Thoughts (go ahead... I've got thick skin).

I would just go ahead and list it. They don't check into the places as far as I know. The name of the employer is Akane, and the occupation is masseuse, that's all they need to know.

But if you want to go the other route, we omitted some of my husband's previous employers for various reasons - no longer in business, some under the table work. And we had no problems.

Lying will only cause problems. They are only looking for background information. TELL THE TRUTH.

Does she pay taxes at the massage place? One thing that some people may be asked is if they have been involved in prostitution within the past 10 years during the consulate interview. Doesn't matter if she didn't have sex with clients because it could still be viewed as prostitution.

You may want to find someone else from Thailand and ask them about consulate questions, etc.

If she lies, she could get busted and barred. If she tells the truth, she could get denied. Don't really know what to tell you.

What about a situation where your fiance has little or no verifiable employment? Kumar has a trekking guide license which he can show if it means anything but has never had the sort of job where he reports to one place...he also does some volunteer teaching work, would it be good to mention that when the time comes?

jenn,

Indeed, the name of the place and the occupation is all they need to know - consular officers know their local city.

Thee_Rak has a valid concern.

It's not like she's paid taxes or anything... she could just as easily say that she's been working at a bookshop a friend owns. We are both really worried about this. She isn't a "freelancer" and we didn't meet through a marriage broker. We simply met and fell in love.

I'm leaning towards the bookshop...

Maybe you should get a consultation with an immigration lawyer who is familiar with fiance visas for people from Thailand. They'd be way more experienced with this than us as well as what type of checks and scrutiny to expect a the consulate there.
