Some Questions re: Embassy in Paris, and Packet 3

I have some questions re: Embassy in Paris!

1) Because he lived in UK for 2 years, we are waiting on UK police certificate. Should we wait to send DS-2001 until we have the certificate in-hand?

2) There are a couple of forms, and it's not indicated when he should send/bring to Embassy. At the bottom of DS-2001, it says "Do not send any documents to this office unless you are specifically requested to do so by this office." So, they enclosed the forms but don't say whether or not to send them... :unsure:

What did your fiance do for the French police certificate? Oh nevermind, I'll just tell my fiance to post here to ask you about it, his VJ username is Stclair. :lol: My fiance's scanning on the documents for me to see.

Complete and return immediately the enclosed form OF-230 PART 1, APPLICATION FOR IMMIGRANT VISA [word cut off]ALIEN REGISTRATION (biograpic data). This office cannot process your case until this form is recieved.

I guess it's the checklist and the... umm... is the OF-230 the same as the DS-230? Well, it seems to be those two things that need to be mailed back to the embassy.

Military records: A certified copy of any military record, if applicable and obtainable, is required.

My fiance never served in the military, he was waived from that requirement. He's trying to dig up the letter that said he was waived. :wacko: I wonder how necessary that is?

Is the I-864 circled with writing in French and an arrow pointing to it on yours? It says "www.uscis.gov de votre fiance". Very helpful. :huh: I'm filling out both the I-134 and I-864 and will let my fiance ask them which one they want at the interview.

This is the thing he got that he mentioned, with sensitive info blacked out. Basically, from what he's told me, if he had any arrests or anything they'd be listed where the diagonal line crosses that space out. Is this the thing he needs for the police certificate, or does he need something else?

I imagine if he never served, then no military records are required... that's what I assume for my fiance!

Yes, it's circled with French writing. I filled out the I-134 and the I864. It seems that they are looking for the I-864, but he now has both. With them, I sent him a copy of my 2005 tax returns, plus a letter from my employer, pay stubs for the last several months, and the last two months worth of bank statements. I earn well above the poverty line, and have enough in a savings account plus 401(k), so I assume that's all he'll need.

I think that's the same police certificate that my fiance received!

Yes, the police report is the "extrait du casier judiciare" that's what they're looking for.

Shana

Thanks! :D

Was your fiance around back when joining the military was mandatory for all males around the age of 18? My fiance got out of that requirement, so that's why I'm wondering if he needs to bring the letter stating he was waived from the required enlistment... I'm wondering if the consular officer will see his date of birth and say why didn't you serve like you were required to. Then again, I also don't know much about this required enlistment thing as what he's told me has been sorta confusing.

I remember that one girl over on the French/America couples post that brought both and they took the I-134... so yeah, I'm preparing both also. I make nearly $10k over the poverty guideline, but I only have a few thousand in the bank so that won't mean much asset wise. I also have only had this job for 2 1/2 months. I'm sending a copy of the one tax return I did file within the last 3 years (haven't filed this year's yet) and will write a letter stating that I was a student/volunteer missionary during the other times and had no income. My paystubs - haven't figured out how many of them to send yet... will go to my bank for that letter today... I'll see what else I have to do, I'm gonna fill the forms out today (I should've done them before :blush:). I've got a co-sponsor just in case, but she's only filling out the I-134. The wording on the I-864 is just too scary, I couldn't ask her to fill that out.

Ok, good. :)

I'm still a little confused, I see Optional Form 156 Part 1... but the instructions on the checklist say to send OF-230 Part 1. I see DS-230, but I don't see a OF-230. The embassy page here on VJ says to send back the DS-230 so... maybe it was just a typo on the checklist? Or are the 2 forms the same thing? Whatever it is, that and the checklist do appear to be the only 2 things to send back to the embassy.

I don't think he was around then - I didn't realize that there was a mandatory enlistment in the last 25 years or so. So he didn't need to get a waiver.

I just realized that the I-864 has to be notarized. I sent him an un-notarized copy. Have to re-send now with a notary!

The checklist is a little confusing, and the person that sent it to him had crossed out a couple of things, and wrote in a couple of things. I'm sure it'll all get figured out, plus we have plenty of time since we have to wait for the UK police certificate anyways. I can't believe that's the thing that's going to hold us up. And it's OUR fault, not theirs!! How ironic.

My fiance's 28. I've tried doing some Google hunting to find out what on earth he's talking about... haven't been able to find anything yet.

Oops. Did you send him an updated letter of intent? I keep reminding myself to do that, I have a feeling I'm gonna forget.

You have plenty of time, we don't! We want to get the required forms out in the mail Monday, if possible. All we need is for me to do my paperwork and send it over before his interview, thank goodness his time living in England was before the age of 16... and the only other place he's lived besides Rambouillet and Versailles was the USA which doesn't need police certificates from what I've read on VJ. My parents got the certified copy of my birth certificate for me yesterday, I'm heading out to the bank now to request that letter, which they said can take up to a week for them to do. I'll fill out things and take em to be notarized today. It's all stuff that I should've done already. :blush:

Yes, I did. Just the standard "We plan to get married, I still support this petition" yada yada yada.

Take a look at the I-134 instructions under II. Supporting Evidence:

A. Statement from an officer of the bank or other financial institutions where you have deposits, identifying the following details regarding your account:

1. Date account opened;

2. Total amount deposited for the past year;

3. Present balance

As to whether or not it's a requirement, that'd be a good question to post on the foreign embassy forum. ;) I've just assumed that, since it's listed there and doesn't say "If you are using your bank account as an asset" or anyhting like that, it's something that I should do. As my high school band teacher drilled into our heads many times... it's better to be prepared and not have the opportunity than it is to have the opportunity and not be prepared. I'd rather send too much than too little. :)

They might be closed on Monday for the holiday. ;) When you go bring the I-134 instructions and just point it at it. My bank only has my last 6 months of deposits on file so they had to request to have the 6 months before that faxed to them, they said it'll take at least a week. It's ok... I shouldn't need a co-sponsor but I've got one just-in-case, and I'm still waiting for her to get all her I-134 stuff together and mailed to me so I have to wait for that anyway.
