I have a restrcited SS number too but my wife did not a few years back. It wasnt hard to get, but she couldnt get a drivers license or bank account until she got it. The main reason is the patriot act.

All new immigrants! Also remember to ALWAYS report your foreign investments/bank accounts/securities on your tax returns when you file them too. I think you only have to if you have more than $10k in foreign assets though

We mailed our package 5/5, it was received 5/7, and we got the NOA1 5/12. The check got cashed, too!

My husband applied for a social security number after poe, he also applied for a texas photo id which has expired already. They expire the same time as the 90 day window for marriage. (Not sure why). We are hoping he gets ead and ap soon so he can apply for a drivers license and a job. We have a joint bank account and he has a debit card.

Take on-line driving training.

Pass the course.

Get certificate in the mail.

Go to DMV / DPS

Apply for Learners Permit

They (DMV / DPS) will send documents to Austin.

3 to 4 weeks later, Austin approves

Wait for letter from DMV / DPS

With letter in hand, go back to DMV / DPS

Pick up Learners permit that is good for 1 year.

This is applicable for TEXAS

Please keep in mind that some dates are only known after receipt of another document.
For example, the USPS Form 3811. The stamped receiving date was not know until the original Form 3811 was received on 07/13/2013 1:30 p/m CST.

what we talking about? SSN lol, I apply and received my SSN a month after POE. but guess what, I tried my SSN on creditKarma and try to apply for a secured credit card, it wasn't showing any details, I believed until we get our EAD or GC before you can actually do anything with it.

It takes the credit reporting agencies few weeks to have your profile. But again, if you don't have any credit account , you may not have a credit after all . Banks don't need SSN to open credit accounts. When I came here in 2009 , I successfully opened macys store credit , Bank of America student credit card and American Express delta credit card with no SSN . I've heard Canadians using their SIN and worked here as well.

I dont have a SSN yet either. I was able to open a joint bank account with my husband though. I'm not able to get like a password for the online banking services yet or whatever they call it, but it's not a big deal because my husband can do it with his password.

What are you guys doing with health insurance? I had insurance from my home country but now I should get one here. But it seems pretty impossible without a SSN, am I right? My husband is in grad-school for one more year, and he is under his parents plan(obama made it possible , you can be under your parents plan till you are 26 even tho you are married). I will have to figure it out asap. :)

I think you"ll be fine without insurance. I was in the same situation . I had insurance from Hong Kong and every time it go see a doctor in the states , I had to send in my bills to get my money reimbursed. I've lived 6 years here without us insurance, and I am just fine. Insurance pricing in the states is insane.

I see you are also in Minnesota, I'm wondering what did you have to do to get a drivers license? Did you have one in Sweden?

I'm from Finland and I thought maybe the rules could be similar for me. I have a drivers license from finland, I should call and see what to do to get my minnesota license.

In nys, you are allowed to drive with your foreign licence for up to one year. Check with your dmv , one of my classmate in New Jersey was able to show her HK driving license and took a written test in exchange for a NJ drivers license , the road test was waived . However , here in New York, they do not accept any foreign driving license except canadian ones. Each state is different , check with your dmv.
