@otter I did the same thing too and got my SSN 6 days after arriving. I initially needed it to open a bank account but it seems like it's the key to so many things over here, the latest for me being health insurance!

what we talking about? SSN lol, I apply and received my SSN a month after POE. but guess what, I tried my SSN on creditKarma and try to apply for a secured credit card, it wasn't showing any details, I believed until we get our EAD or GC before you can actually do anything with it.

I dont have a SSN yet either. I was able to open a joint bank account with my husband though. I'm not able to get like a password for the online banking services yet or whatever they call it, but it's not a big deal because my husband can do it with his password.

What are you guys doing with health insurance? I had insurance from my home country but now I should get one here. But it seems pretty impossible without a SSN, am I right? My husband is in grad-school for one more year, and he is under his parents plan(obama made it possible , you can be under your parents plan till you are 26 even tho you are married). I will have to figure it out asap. :)

I went to the Chicago Ave office the week after arrived, I have my SSN, my own credit card, driver's license, and my own credentials for online banking (U.S. Bank). However, like you I am not insured yet. They need to see a Green Card or an EAD before that is possible apparently.

I see you are also in Minnesota, I'm wondering what did you have to do to get a drivers license? Did you have one in Sweden?

I'm from Finland and I thought maybe the rules could be similar for me. I have a drivers license from finland, I should call and see what to do to get my minnesota license.

You have to take both the knowledge test and the road skills test. I took my knowledge test down at the Midtown office and road test in Eagan. As evidence you need an unexpired I-94 or EAD/GC to be able to obtain one. The license will have a short expiration date, but you can file to renew it when that happens (hopefully you will have the GC by then). You are allowed to drive on your foreign until 60 days after you file for the GC.

Ok thank you! I will have to start doing all that.. One more question, was it expensive?

My husband applied for a social security number after poe, he also applied for a texas photo id which has expired already. They expire the same time as the 90 day window for marriage. (Not sure why). We are hoping he gets ead and ap soon so he can apply for a drivers license and a job. We have a joint bank account and he has a debit card.

I got health insurance without a green card or EAD. I went to healthcare.gov and did it through the Marketplace. They tried to verify my identity through Experian and when that didn't work I had to upload other documentation (State ID & K1 Visa) to prove my identity.

Getting the insurance was a painful process and we spent hours on the phone. I had to get my US spouse to do most of the talking as I don't understand most of the health care terms. I'm glad it's all in force now though and my plan ($320 pcm) is great value, apparently.

I still need to get health care. My husband is thinking of changing his job to one with better benefits. His current one won't let me onto the plan until I have a green card. Of course if I need to go to the doctor we can pay and his family can help out, but it would still be nice to get on a good plan ^^

Oh they let me be on my husbands bank account ^^ only on my maiden name though xD told me to come back when I had a new SS card with my married name as well as my GC/EAD

Seems like, for name change, get GC, to be able to go to SS office and change name, then from there you can do everything else :P

I wonder if it matters that I changed my hair colour since biometrics :P was bleached blonde and now it's blue black xD what can I say I love dying my hair ;___;
