How do you really ever establish ownership of land that land that has traded hands so many times over the ages. Many countries have borders today that were created through conquest.

Well that's the problem in Gibraltar and the Falklands. We probably shouldn't be there but our people have lived in those places for so long that it would be a worse solution to displace a few thousand people just to satisfy a territorial claim.

I've thought this myself. Any nation that claims their "historic territory" as China or Argentina does would basically allow Italy to take control of the EU and northern Africa.

OR perhaps Iran should have the entire Middle East, Pakistan etc.

I think it's relatively trivial personally, given that it's really only a border dispute with some sabre rattling. It's not like China has invaded. It's not even like there's even anything to actually invade.
