Timeline for I-131, Application for USCIS travel document

Hello All,

My mother is LPR. My Father had a green card too but he has abandoned his PR. My mother applied for I-131 in mid-December, had her biometrics appointment in mid January, we haven't heard from USCIS since then. She has applied for 2 year Re-entry permit so that she doesn't have to return within 11 months after departure. This is the 2nd time she has applied for 2 year reentry permit, the 1st one was in 2011 and it was approved back then. So my question is "Can she leave US without getting reentry permit and if she gets permit after leaving US, I can send her permit via relative or courier? " Or Must she stay until she gets re entry permit? If she leaves before getting 2 year re entry permit does it mean that she has abandoned the application and even if re entry permit gets approved at a later date it won't be valid?

So she appplied for a re-entry permit in 2011, returned at the end of the 2 years and applied for another so she can be gone for another 2 years? Good luck with that.

Yes due to Medical and family reasons, I know that it might not be approved but I know in some case it has been approved. My mother want to apply for 10 years multiple entry and want to give up the green card ( my father has already abandoned his GC) but one of my friend's father got denied for Tourist visa after giving up GC!!

Since she already had a 2 yr extension in 2011, it is rather unlikely that she will get another extension again. Many years ago my grandparents (LPR) used to go away for 2 years at a time. And they did that several times. Later, they decided to stay permanently with my parents. But under the present immigration environment it is highly unlikely (although possible) they will get another 2-yr extension. It is definitely not a good idea to leave the country before the extension has been approved.

I am sorry, about the medical reasons. But she will have to decide whether to stay here more permanently and not leave for more than 6-mo at a time or be in India. Otherwise, she will be giving up her GC and may be refused visitor visa later. Sorry for not being able to give you any better news.
