Teen Gangs Responsible For 40% Of NYC Shootings: "It's Like Belonging To An Evil Fraternity"

Police tell AP that teen gangs are responsible for about 40 percent of all city shootings. "Its like belonging to an evil fraternity," said Inspector Kevin Catalina, commander of the NYPD gang division. "A lot of it is driven by nothing: A dispute over a girl or a wrong look or a perceived slight."

Even as the murder rate has plummeted in NYC over the last decade, the number of killings associated with teen gangs has increased in recent years. Police stepped up their pursuit of these criminals by launching Operation Crew Cut in 2012, which involves cops trolling Facebook and other social media for signs of gang activity. As has been demonstrated ad nauseum, teens are not shy about their online presence: social media bragging about misdeeds, especially via Facebook, has netted dozens of arrests.

...

But for some teens, it's much worse than an "evil fraternity"being a member of the Very Crispy Gangsters, Sutter Garden Crips or Dub Gang Money is an automatic membership in a makeshift family. "A crew to me is a family," said Jamal Williams, 18, who has been associated with various gangs since he was 9. "They are going to be there for me like my parents was never there for me."
