I see the start of a new type of Russian reversal.

In Europe, you get paid for internship

In Capitalist America, internship makes YOU pay.

I know right, my nephew told me recently how a mechanics course that he was thinking of doing would likely cost him $30,000.

In the US, labOR (get it right) is celebrated by punching a blue collar worker in the face and taking his money to spend on shoes for dogs.

May Day International Labor Day Did YOU Know It Started In The States?

When the first modern workers demonstration was called by the forerunner of the American Federation of Labor in 1884 (the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Union, or FOTLU), what we know now as May Day was simply to initiate an eight hour work day. The ensuing riots and deaths, however, during the 1886 Chicago demonstrations over a period of several days led to cries of anarchy and disruption that caused irreparable damage to the American labor movements, from which theyve never fully recovered.

During those days, on May First as the crowds in the Haymarket area of Chicago were disbanding, a bomb was thrown killing workers-uniteseveral police officers, whose survivors then rushed the crowd, shooting indiscriminately, killing an unknown number. This led in the following days to the police arresting several of the labor leaders on charges of insurrection and murder, confiscating their files and with all public meetings banned, effectively putting an end to the trade movements at that time. The further hanging of four of the seven arrested (Albert Parsons, August Spies, George Engel and Adolph Fischer) on November 11 1887 provoked international indignation. A newly formed group in Europe, the Socialist International (or First International), called for rallies throughout Europe, and May First was suggested by 2 French militants (Raymond Lavigne and Jean Dormoy). This led to the first truly International labor day, with over a quarter million protesting in Londons Hyde Park alone, instigated by the newly formed New Unionism party, although the English protested on the following Sunday. Germany, Austria, France and Italy all saw their own protests, with the result that by 1896 the German labor movement and associated parties agreed that May Day should be commemorated by a stoppage of work, from which it condensed into the popular mind as a workers holiday, management sanction or no. Further to that several attempts were made in Europe to have this May celebration held on the Sunday of that week, however, most workers in unions continued to not work on May First, and the tradition has held.

With the adoption of the first Monday in September as Labor Day in the United States and Canada, May First quickly became seen as a foreign holiday to North America. As time moved forward to 1917 and the Russian Revolution of that year, and the subsequent regimes adoption of the date for its own polarized propaganda, the date has become since then synonymous with Communism and its celebrated May Day parades. During the Cold War between USA and the USSR, the States tried to have this date looked on as Loyalty Day, with a notable lack of success. Currently, however, many countries continue the holiday tradition without its previous history being involved. In The Russian Federation and across Europe (Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden to name a few) all celebrate May First as a national holiday, while in South America (in Mexico its referred to as Primer De Mayo) in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuadador, Brazil, Chile and Peru, again this date is looked to as a national workers day of recognition and rest. With Korea (both), Vietnam (both), Hong Kong, Thailand and China all holding May Day festivals (notably China, who up until 2008 held a week long holiday to enable people to travel, since then its a one day holiday with three older holidays re-instated Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day and Mid Autumn Festival) it can be said that this is truly one of the few internationally recognized holidays.
