Hi Saylin, can the AP be totally random? Or is there always a specific - perhaps unfounded - reason? And what kind of reasons can it be? I tried to look it up but people don't seem to know (or to tell) why it happened to them. Thanks for your answer in advance and no worries if you don't have time to answer, I am being curious (and a bit worried it is totally random!)

I can tell you that it seems to be random within certain demographics. Three of my wife's nephews applied at the same time for student visas a couple of years ago. All fresh out of high school, All had the same common last name. One had several previous visits to Iran for religious pilgrimages and the other two none. One of them was put on administrative processing for several months and the other two got their visas on the spot. The Iran frequent flyer was not the one put on AP.

In my case, I got a J1 visa in 2007 as a visiting professor and opted to leave the family home and only shuttle back and forth every couple of months. Within that year my wife was diagnosed with cancer, so I applied for a B1/B2 visa for her and the kids as she refused to travel for her treatment without them. For good measure, since I would show up at the interview on my family's behalf (kids underage and wife in hospital), I simultaneously and naively applied for one for myself. My best guess, this is the reason for the AP I got, especially since it ended exactly two years after the issuance of my J1 visa. Their other options would have been to either deny my B1/B2 visa application or cancel my J1 visa. I would have faired much worse with either. So, in a weird way, I'm thankful for that AP. In fact, looking back, I am amazed that they approved my wife's visa without an interview.

By the way, once you're in AP, they never tell you why or for how long. They don't tell you why even after you get the clearance. The only thing you get is the stamped visa with a "Clearance Received mm/dd/yyyy" printed at the bottom to show for it. The above explanation for my AP is just guesswork on my part and I could be totally off the mark.

hahaha, I bet VJ'ers will educate them more than the NVC :P

Good luck and hopefully they get to your review soon!

Well, they've had my AOS for 2 weeks not (still hasn't been reviewed) and they got the IV on Friday. I'm thinking and hoping for early June case complete. I forgot to ask the Agent what day they were currently working on, but I don't know if she would have handed that info out willy nilly.

And last CONGRATS TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope and pray that's true. My docs were received April 29th and I still have not heard anything. No checklist, no case complete, nothing

Same boat as you guys, and same dates too. No checklists, no nothing!

I called this morning (been trying to get through since yesterday lol). ANYHOO they have my AOS and IV packets but they have not been reviewed yet. She said it can take up to 30 days bla bla bla.

I told her I realized the website had some updates over the weekend and will the status of my civil documents change from N/A to 'reviewed/check list/accepted'? She had no clue what I was talking about and asked me three times what site was I trying to access the information.

So I explained again, I told her on th CEAC site, there used to be pretty green check marks but now those are gone. Instead it states "N/A" for my civil documents and it confused me as I know they're at NVC. She confirmed there were changes but other than that has no clue about the details of the updates and says she doesn't think the status will change from "N/A" to anything else.

How lovely of them to update their web site and then not explain the changes to their customer service reps so they can then explain the changes to customers. The Agent was nice overall and sounded genuinely perplexed!

LMAO!

At least your customer service rep was polite!

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. Maybe some embassies are harsher and are running more background check? Or as Saylin said it may depend on the CO. All we can do is to pray there will be no AP! Thanks again for sharing with all of us :-)

Thanks !! My husband told me not to call til later today .. Everytime I call the NVC I get a different schpeel. One says my file is with a supervisoer, another says they found my mail and added it to our file and the supervisor is going to review, another says there are two pieces of mail waiting for review ( totally not the case. I only sent one package) another says since the supervisor already looked at the file and the mail was not in it, the date for the mail received May 8th was changed to May 12th. I was like WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? she says please allow 30 days for review from the 12th. then another says there is mail waiting to be reviewed from May 8th. right back to square one...

I'm not expecting anything this week. I can't stand this anymore

Schpeel? LOL!!!!! ! Does anyone who's not from PA even know what that means? LOL!! Sometimes I miss PA!!! (And the cheesesteaks). But some members were talking the other day about publix sandwiches and I can relate. They are yummy! Good vibes to you coming all the way up I-95!!!!!!!

I second that, so sorry for the off topic posts! I know where you're coming from about the cheese... my husband worked as a fish vendor/chef and so I tried all kinds of fish and seafood (we met because I bought oysters from him one day at the market.) We had the best time living in France -- we were both immigrants, so everything was a discovery. He'll get to do it all over again in the US.

No one ever noticed that I didn't have the stamp in my passport from the OFII visit, not even when we applied to get married! I couldn't believe it. Gosh it's too pricey.

Haha I knew it, they were not that serious about the medical examination! And I looove your oysters story! Such a cute way to meet your husband!

He is a US citizen, lived in the UK, now moved back to the US. I am French, we met in 2010 in the UK and got married in March 2013 in France.
