  1. 1. Is Santorum right?

    • Yes. Democrats care more about the poor than Republicans do.
    • No. Republicans care more about the poor than Democrats do.
    • No. Republicans care more about the poor just as much as Democrats do.
  2. 2. SHOULD political parties spend an inordinate amount of time and effort addressing poverty issues?

    • Yes, because how we treat our poor shows the world what kind of society we really are.
    • No, because it's a distraction. Poverty is a symptom, it isn't the disease. Focus on the disease (economic growth, ensuring equal opportunity, etc.)
    • No, because poor people are a cancer that can never be removed. Don't waste time talking about them too much. There are more important things.

Answering a question about the idea of altering the earned income tax credit as an alternative to raising the minimum wage, Santorum spoke out about the “importance of work” in America, with some detours through his problems with the Affordable Care Act and the “dangerous” co-habitating relationships of single mothers.

Eventually, Santorum arrived at the point that “we” — meaning conservatives — don’t talk about these issues enough. “Well, people ask me if Republicans care as much about the poor as Democrats do. I’m not sure we do,” he said. “I’m not sure we do, and the reason I’m not sure we do is because I don’t hear us talking about them very often and if you really cared you’d talk about the problems they had.”

Compared to the poor of many countries, our poor live pretty well. Even our homeless and panhandlers are of a better class. Therefore, the best solution would be to ship America's poor off to other countries, to improve the quality of poor people everywhere.

That only works if we let them take their Escalades and iPhones with them. And if the EBT cards still work.

I don't know about the Escalades - In the Philippines, having a car means you are rich, or you use that car for hire, and having two cars means you are filthy rich. As far as iPhones and Smartphones, kids are almost born with those now. They will go without food if they can get a load on their phones On the EBT cards, $100/month would be a decent lifestyle for a family in the province. You could probably cut the payments by a half or more.

Don't we already do that? As long as they pretend they need it to look for jobs.

I would liked to have heard the answer to the question that was actually put to him regarding minimum wage versus the earned income tax credit...

Instead we got "Work is important" and blather about the dangers of single moms co-habituating and Obamacare - and then a soundbyte to imply that there is some self introspection going on (or needed) in the GOP regarding the poverty question.

bravo buddy.
