Personal check is fine and I believe he has the right fee ($1070 for I-485 and $420 for I-130). It might be that you need two separate checks. My check's address is different than my current address, however I did not reprint the new address on it and I had no problem with it. I did write my wife name and her Alien number on the top middle of the check.

You paid to U.S Dept of Homeland Security, Does that suppose to spell out Department instead of Dept? I am just guessing.

You can not send a personal check. Resubmit using only a cashiers check. I also believe the amount you sent was incorrect. make sure you are sending only the $300.00 or $400.00 something. Check on the amount

That is blatantly incorrect.

what? no personal checks?

Personal checks are perfectly ok, as well as money orders. LadyJane72 information is not correct.

I had the help from an organization referred to me from Immigration in my home city (I started and made an appointment through infopass) I went to the window and they told me to go through an organization / gave me a paper of everyone they recommend (usually churches) and paid a small fee of $200.00. The organization did all my paperwork for me and when I paid with a check she told me to only give her a cashiers check, so that is what I did. Mine was just approved / 1 1/2 months. Now it is onto the Visa Center....then Jamaica :)

Maybe it was a money order....sorry I cant remember

To be clearer:

The check is written out to US Department of Homeland Security for $1,490(this are all of the fees combined). My name and address are pre printed on the check(the address is our PO BOx which is different than our home address). I signed my name on the check and wrote on the left side of the check "For (insert my wifes name)"

I dont understand why they would just attach a check and write nothing on the form they sent as to what the problem was. Ridiculous.

The same thing that happened to us. My hubby used his personal check, and abbreviate to US DHS which was totally wrong. So we called for an appointment to help us out in sending the right documents from other branch of USCIS and the agent told us that the check must come from your bank and we asked for both of our named to be wrote on the check.

We used bank united for payment and it stated both of our names in there.

We used infopass.com to make an appointment regarding our problem (I hope that's the right website)

Unfortunately many organisations and lawyers who help people with immigration paperwork are not very knowlegeble. It's plenty of stories here how immigration lawyers just screwing people. It's great that your petition was approved, but it doesn't mean that lady who helped you with paperwork knows everything about her job, or she might have a reason she did not want to use personal check. USCIS accepting personal checks just fine. :)

Thank you so much! giving misledaing dissinformation can be dangerious. I appreciate those who support their posts with evidence and not just give only personal opinions or interpretations.

First it is apparent to me that calling 1-800-375-5283 for anything is useless. After being told initially by the call center rep that he couldnt help me because he has generic information(?) he said he would escalate it to someone who could see all of the documents I sent(I am assuming because they were scanned?)

So called escalation. The call rep, who sounded 100 years old, told me he could not help either. I told him did he realize that both he and the previous rep are not able to provide any viable information. He hung up.

Nevertheless I discovered that the packet had been stapled into four seperate packets by the Chicago lockbox. I noticed that all four packets had the same I-797 form attached to them with the same generic verbiage on them except one. One of the packets (the I-130 packet) had written that my address had not been written on the I-130.

Ridiculous. I checked the form again and again and all the addresses are filled out. The only address that was not filled out was question #19. That is because my wife is here and not overseas. And because she is here I filled out the left side of question 22 writing out the city and state we are in.

What a mess. The I-130 packet is correct with all addresses. The check is 100% written out properly yet it is stapled to the form like their is something wrong with it.

I have lost confidence in this process after spending so much time making sure everything is correct only to discover that the Chicago lockbox folks are not doing their job.

Any thoughts or comments? Just send it back again?

I just put my parent's address abroad for Question 19 on the I130 but it may be acceptable to put N/A, the fact you left it blank is a problem.

They stapled the check to the notice as they are unable to accept the package without the I130 completed correctly.
