Change first name before receiving green card?

We've already applied for AOS and are currently waiting. We've already received the work permit.

Question.

Would it cause any problems if my wife changed her first (not last) name now, without yet having received a green card?

It would not cause her any problems, however she would have to report hew new name to the USCIS and get a new greencard altogether.

She would need to provide a copy of the court order name change and file an I-90 to have the name changed on her green card. The fee for that is $450.

No. You file the I-90 to correct the green card to reflect her new name after she receives the green card in her old name that you filed for AOS with.

So I guess we'll wait until after the green card has been issued. Even if it's allowed, better to not rock the boat.

I'd be careful with this as it seems quite the trend for Chinese to choose 1950's American names like Eugene, Harold, Carol, Joyce, etc.

She can legally change her entire name for free at naturalization, if she can wait that long.
