My passport will expire this May and we are still waiting for our interview schedule. I am planning to renew the passport sometime in September. I am hoping to receive my EAD/AP card before the interview so I can apply for DL and SSN.

Just wondering, will an expired passport during AOS interview cause any problem?

Thanks, in advance for responding

Last I checked the Dallas processing times were one of the worst so you should have your EAD well before your interview so you would then be able to get a state issued DL that you could use as ID at the interview, however there is still some risk there. Why not renew your passport now?

Your passport is a form of ID and to be a valid form of ID needs to be unexpired. Your passport is also used for international travel so if it is expired you cannot travel internationally even with AP/EAD or the GC. Other than that it is not needed. How many USC go around without a passport? As long as you have other forms of valid government issued ID or can wait for the AP/EAD card and have not interest in international travel, you can wait until you become a USC to get a valid US passport. It is up to you.

Good luck,

Dave

Good thing you asked. Since my passport was expired on my Biometrics appointment, a supervisor had to validate my identity. Passport is my only I'd then. She asked for my birth and marriage certificates. She checked if the data matched and allowed me to proceed.

During the interview, I have already have my EAD card and state id.

I would advise to wait until the AOS process is over before you renew your passport. Sometimes the process goes faster than you expected and you need your passport every step of the way.

Thank you ver much for sharing your experience. I know every one's experience is different and every step of the process as well as timing would be exactly the same as the ones who encounter zero problems.

Ironically my AOS case is straight forward with no complications and it wasn't I was told by two diff immigration attorneys who we consulted in person here in town, that I have to reniew my passport and encounter some problems when I tried to renew it, is when things got a little messed up.

Based on your experience I am going to inquire a little further so I do not have to go thru su much unnecessary headache if I don't absolutely have to in order to renew my passport.

Let me ask you a few more questions, from the time you sent your AOS package until you recieved your NOA for I-130 , is it when you also received your appointment for Biometrics? how lond did that take in your case? , how soon after Biometrics you recieved EAD? also, after the biometrics and/or EAD, how long until you recieved notice for your interview? With EAD in hand is when you can apply for a DL, is that correct? in my case I cour reniew mine before interview. I am trying to have an idea for the timing

Again, thank for posting

As stated, expired passport can be used for ID for biometrics. Some people don't have access to anything else.

Hi Hi

My passport expired back in March and went in for my interview last week.

Immigration officer asked for my passport, but didn't look at it.

NO problem.
