US Pacific Command Plans Responses for Unilateral Chinese Coercion

  1. 1. If China decides to 'take' property that belongs to others, should the US respond?

    • Yes. China needs to be shown, in no uncertain terms, that America is still boss.
    • No. Let China have East and Southeast Asia. It is their manifest destiny.
    • Only if the property being taken is important. Strategically, or if it has oil.

A report in the Wall Street Journal highlights the U.S. military’s broad contingency planning for responding to Chinese provocations in the East and South China Sea where territorial disputes abound with several important U.S. allies.

According to the report, the plans comprise everything from a symbolic show force by flying B-2 bombers to more provocative aircraft carrier exercises in the waters around China ... this new action plan for the Asia-Pacific strives to make U.S. intentions known to China, which may continue to attempt to coercively change the status quo. The issue driving U.S. planning seems to be credibility — ensuring that the United States’ presence in the Asia-Pacific remains a credible deterrent for China as it strives to pursue its claims to territorial disputes.

...

Overall, expect to see the U.S. military respond to any unilateral Chinese provocations in the East and South China Seas. While Washington won’t engage in an escalatory game of #######-for-tat, it will ensure the the U.S. presence and posture in the Asia-Pacific is pegged to the relative assertiveness of Beijing’s behavior. Under the new PACOM plans, any attempts at unilateral coercion by China will be met by the United States bearing down in the region.

U.S. officials believe that this strategy avoids the risk of a skirmish or a “shooting war” between the U.S. and China. This belief is based on intelligence estimates that the People’s Liberation Army remains divided about how China’s military should respond to assertive moves by the United States.

...

That this report emerged as President Obama returns from Asia should be no coincidence. The president’s trip to Asia was intended as a grand tour for the purpose of reassuring the United States’ allies and friends who have grown skeptical of U.S. credibility after witnessing the U.S. response to Ukraine and Syria in recent years. PACOM’s new plans are one way to make the “pivot to Asia” more credible and will likely draw the support of most U.S. allies in the region.

An embargo against the Chinese would bankrupt the US economy. No way the US does anything more than posture. China will probably get most of what they want, in exchange for an international agreement that this is all they get, and no more. after the US agrees to pay off everybody else to sign the agreement.

China has become the worlds largest manufacturer. The us is number two. Both of them share a common best customer, the us. Who would hurt most as a result between a us/china embargo?

I'd be for any republican that advocates raising taxes while reigning in government spending in an attempt to balance the budget. Alas, my confidence in any candidate being able to make any headway with our congressional body has never been lower.

Plus, they have no confidence in their own markets so they park all their excess money in the US. The know-nothings who dominate American politics cry about this like it's a bad thing. "The Chinese own us!", they cry. They're morons.

It is not like China has much of a choice, as the trade surplus between the two nations supplies them with lots of US dollars. Why do you think the Chinese want the world to shift to a different reserve currency? Inflation is already happening in the US. Wage pressure is about to be relieved explosively. Look at the bidding wars going on in certain real estate markets. When interest rates start spiking, the end will be near.

In geologic time, maybe.

You don't want a third Democratic term. That's when all the social issue weirdos will start crawling out from under the rocks.

One can only hope the Republicans are wise enough to nominate Jeb in 2016.

Alas, that would hurt them. The US Dollar is stabler yet more forgiving to fluctuations than the Euro. Besides, the more they shun away from the USD, the more expensive their exports will become to us, and reality is there is only so much ####### Europe can buy.
