My fiancé and I went to SSA office, April 21 2014, less than 3 weeks before my I-94 is about to expired. We were lucky because only us apply that day. The lady behind the window looked at us and ask if she can help and my fiancé told her that we wanted to apply SSN.

The lady then asked us go to a machine next to door to get our number. After our number was printed, we took our seats and the lady called the number. I went to the window and the lady asked a question which was I replied that I wanted to apply a new SSN.

She then asked my I-94 and passport, checked on the computer and wondered if I was born with that name - I have a single name and no middle name-. I told her, yes I was born with that name and she continued to proceed the application.

She looked confusing for a while and paused. " What kind visa do you have?" she stopped, flipped my passport back and forth, took it away, and asked her co-workers. When she came back, I told her that I entered to the US with K-1 visa. She shake her head and repeated, " J-1 visa?" which my fiancé corrected her, " K-1 visa". It is understood since my pronunciation quite different from English native speakers. I am glad my fiancé with me.

The lady finally smiled. "Oh, okay, I found your information on the website". She kept busy entering all information. She asked if I knew my alien number. Thank God I brought my NOA-2 which is contain my alien number. " Yes, I do have in fact I have here with me," I replied back and handed a copy of my NOA-2. She definitely had no idea about immigration thing and she asked me where is my alien number. I pointed it to her and she nodded and smiled again.

" I don't know much about K-1 visa. My daughter in law came here with K-1 visa and she's from Canada but it was long time ago, " she explained while kept entering all information on computer. " There are many ways of people come here to the US and very rare to see with a K-1 visa," she continued talking to me.

She asked me if I am going to work after got SSN and I said no since we were not married yet and we need to file AOS to get permission to work. What came surprise me that she doesn't know that a K-1 visa holder has to marry the petitioner within 90 days. " Wow, I thought 6 months," she looked surprise and I explained to her that K-1 visa is a single entry visa, has validity up to 6 months before PoE, its holder has to marry the petitioner within 90 days and file adjustment of status to be a legal permanent resident.

She gave me a paper, asked me if all information there was correct and I said yes. She then handed me the paper , asked me to signed it, and told me they will mailed my SSN card and should wait up to 4 weeks to get it. I got my SSN on April 28 2013, a week after I applied it. That was super fast comparing to many posts here complaining how slow they got it in mail and difficulty to deal with SSA employees.

April 21 is Monday and April 28 is Monday. You should count the Saturday because mail usually also came on Saturday. So technically it's six days, but I don't know if in your state mail usually came on Saturday or not because if not then yes it's five days :)

Last year, I also applied it on Monday and received it on Saturday.

oh well, congrats to both of us because we didn't have problem when we applied it ;)

Lol. Agreed. We did not encounter any problem for SSN that's only matter. Actually, my husband and I never received mails on Saturday in mailbox at our apartment. Some people told us post office never delivered mail on Saturday.

That's great! So we both got it in five business days :)

Is it in your maiden name or married name? Some people found hard to get it in their married name so they applied it in their maiden name and changed it later on, but I didn't have any problem to apply it in my married name though.

Yes, I applied before got married. Though it is not required for marriage license but I am glad applied it since I can put my SSN on it. I also read here about how difficult is when apply SSN after married. But I guess it depends on luck, LOL. You were lucky did not have to deal with incompetent SSA employees.
