Report: Clippers owner Donald Sterling caught on tape telling his girlfriend to not bring African-Americans to 'my games'

How do you date a guy that can't embrace your ancestry? Furthermore, how can he date her and not understanding he is dipping in her half African American blood which he hates so much? Reminds me of the slave days how the men would go out to the slave quarters to have sex with the African women. I just don't get people's way of thinking or how they justify their thoughts.

TMZ revealed a recording early Saturday morning of what it says is Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling pathetically admonishing his girlfriend for “associating” with African-Americans – apparently she made the major mistake, in Sterling’s eyes, of posing for a photo with Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, a photo she later uploaded to her Instagram account.

It's a shocking and infuriating 9½-minute bit of tape that should embarrass the NBA and force new commissioner Adam Silver into action.

According to TMZ's recording, Sterling went on to chide his girlfriend, who is half-African-American and half-Mexican, for bringing African-Americans to Clippers games, even if those guests in question were of exalted status as Magic is, and even if she’s never done as much.

The recording is an absolutely depressing listen, to say the least. Here are some of the snippets, according to TMZ, from Sterling, who told his girlfriend V. Stiviano that he feels “very strongly” about her “broadcasting” the fact she briefly spoke to and posed with a very famous black man:

-- "
You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that ... and not to bring them to my games."
(5:15)

-- "
It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?"
(3:30)

-- "...Don't put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don't bring him to my games."
(9:13)

Donald Sterling is the NBA’s great shame, and now a major media outlet apparently has him on record as telling a woman – one that he obscenely disrespects throughout the entire exchange – that he doesn’t want African-Americans coming to his basketball games. Whether Sterling is sadly mixing up his words or only referring to Magic Johnson personally, or jealous of the brief attention his much younger girlfriend (Sterling is still married to another woman, mind you) received isn’t the point – the point is that the NBA has to do something about its biggest problem.

This is indefensible. Sterling’s treatment of this woman is execrable enough, but the clear intent of his message and what’s simmering just underneath what he actually lets out should be enough to force what has previously been a spineless league (regarding the Clippers' owner) into action. The Clippers could boast a lily-white roster and coaching staff, that part barely matters in relation to Donald Sterling – owner of an NBA team – being taped telling someone he doesn’t want African-Americans at his basketball games.

Fight with his girl, heat of the moment, jealous as hell – it does not matter.

This is Silver’s first great task. He’ll have to balance the interests of a small team-owning few versus the respect of hundreds of millions. This, like Donald Sterling, is a no-brainer.

I just got done reading this. I am a huge NBA fan. The NBA needs to ban him from any and all operations of the Clips. The players are even wanting to boycott the game.

I can't understand why she is with him as he has been known to be a racist in the past. Is dating a wealthy man worth it?

Apparently, it seems to be rather an open relationship.

Still, him being made of money doesn't excuse his being a racist dirtbag.

To some women poor treatment is worth it. I could not date or marry a man if he cannot embrace my ancestry. I could not imagine how horrible this must be. He is just using her for young #######. Which if he is so racist, why deep in a package you don't like? That is the most disturbing thing to me.

She is just as much at fault as he is though. She should get some self esteem.

Apparently she doesn't love herself enough. Hope this serves as a wake up call.

In my lifetime I have seen many people allow themselves to be a doormat. Never understood it but it is their life to lead.

Hopefully as she grows older she will learn. She is a hot babe though.

I think what it does is demonstrate how racial bigotry can exist even among so-called mixed couples. We've had members here refer to their marriage as proof that they couldn't possibly harbor any racial bigotry, like being married to someone from another ethnicity is a get-out-jail-free card. When Sterling refers to his girlfriend as light skinned or latina, he unfortunately demonstrates how bigotry exists on a spectrum. He's not your run-of-the-mill racist, but probably shares more in common with a lot people from his generation who have adapted to modern society while still holding on to preconceived hang-ups about racial integration. He seems to try and say that it's not his problem, but Clippers fans, supporters, and possibly investors that might have a problem with his GF being seen surrounded by black males on twitter.

Sterling has already been the subject of lawsuits for his bigotry. She has to know this.

Whoah. I had no idea about his past. I've been a longtime Phoenix Suns fan and my jaw dropped when I just read about his comments over signing Danny Manning. Right now, I feel bad for the Clippers players. They played so well this year, but this may derail them completely.

Well the lawsuits did not have to do with his team but his properties. He refused to rent to blacks and hispanics. The NBA knew about it though. Now the NBA will have to do something. More than likey they will force him out as they should.

With the technology available, there is no public event that can truly be treated as safe from this kind of eavesdropping any more. As long as dirtbags like this guy don't catch on to that fact, we can be sure to have fun exposing these kinds of people for a while yet.

-I thought that kinda thing was fairly common. You love your wife, you hate her mom. You love your wife can't stand her italian temper.

Aren;t you the one always pointing out (rightly so) that "individuals in any group are not all alike?"

So for example -= it is completely possible to love a White man but dislike to be around whites in general.

Sounds to me like this is that exact case here.
