There are many "snowbirds" who spend their winters in the USA and their summers in Canada. My grandparents used to do it. Taxes become more and more complicated if they do more than visit quite honestly. They won't lose their pension or old age security, or even their retirement, but they would lose their health care. But it would be highly, highly recommended, as always, to have travel insurance when travelling out of Canada.

My ex-SIL used to own a house in Hawaii and lived there for pretty much 11 months (6 at the end of one year and 5 at the beginning of the next) as her understanding was it was 6 months per calendar year, not per 365 days. Her daughters went to school in Hawaii as well. According to their lawyer it was legal, but we all know how THAT goes. *rolleyes*

Anyhow, while health care in the USA can be superior, it's also very expensive, so you may want to cross those bridges when you come to them. It might be best for them to just become snowbirds. :)

I wish I could bring my parents - they're a little older and my mum has been diagnosed with Altzheimers so they've be staying put. Obviously stayign where healthcare is is best for them!

So how do you parents feel about it - do they want to be snowbirds who only spend a few months in the US or are they thinking permanently and in that case you could petition for them? I can;t recall if you have to be a citizen or an LPR to do that - someone else will know.
