So we read this in the instructions for the I-485 form.

All this time we've been thinking that we would pay the $1070 + $380 (EAD) + $445 (Travel permit)

So I'm correct when I say we pay the $1070 and the I-485, EAD and travel permit are covered, right!?

If you apply for EAD & AP at the same time as AOS, you just pay for AOS.

Even if you apply later for the EAD or AP, including the NOA1 for the AOS gets them for free.

Really? So there's never a cost associated with them unless you apply before AOS?

Yes, indeed! $ 1070 only it is. :)

Yeah, I was corrected before as well about this. There's no separate cost if one is doing the AOS (but definitely not before AOS submission). Apparently, you only need to submit the receipt notice (NOA) with the requirements when one finally decides to submit their EAD & AP later after submission of the AOS. I honestly don't think anybody wants to do that. But who knows?

Yep, it does sound a little crazy to apply and pay extra for the EAD prior to the AOS process. It is only valid a short time (i.e. 90 days?), then one would have to apply for it again when doing the AOS/EAD/AP applications.

Since the recent advent of protracted AOS processing times, it is a general recommendation to apply for the AOS/EAD/AP at the same time. There may employment opportunities or requisite travel prior to the AOS process is complete. Especially since there are no additional fees when concurrently submitted as previously mentioned. Heck, you have to fork over $1070, which is a wad-o-cash already. So, it is a deal, the extra EAD/AP apps are a walk in the park......

Good luck.

Very true! I am only recently studying these timelines. I admire people who look forward and prepare for the necessary costs and it's definitely fine that you have extra money with excessive planning ahead. But I am not sure what to feel when people get the shock of their lives once the fiance/fiancee arrives and a little short-handed for AOS. IMO, they lose more money eventually with the potential longer down time, unless of course, they want a-stay-at-home spouse. Maybe good for some!

Yes, I personally struggle to understand how people can get so wrapped up in the emotions of this that they fail to even bother figuring out what's next. I mean, in my mind, it's a natural progression. You put one foot in front of the other, verify that there is a ground to drop that foot on, & drop it. Repeat. That's how you walk. So it makes no sense to me to lift your foot (apply for the K-1) but then not check if there is a ground to drop that foot on (AOS). You might as well not even bother applying for a K-1 if you don't do AOS. Just have the person come here illegally because it's the same thing. This site has helped me tremendously. I went from knowing literally nothing about the subject in October when I met my Fiancee to being fairly well-versed at this point. I'm still learning, but the good thing about this journey is, there's no shortage of time that can be spent learning.

You'd be surprised how many people get their NOA2 and have no idea what even the next step is. Some people just operate that way, I couldn't do it myself, I was well aware of all the required steps before even applying for my wife's visa. I might not have known all the details, those I learned while waiting to reach that step, but at least I knew they were there to be done and about what it was going to cost. I'm certainly glad I had the AOS money stashed away before I even applied for the I-129. Right now we're at the ROC stage, and I put that money aside 6 months ahead of time.

We're not far enough along yet.

OK I thought you were one the folk that found out they were free after filing the AOS. That's why I like to mention, even after filing, you can still get them free with the NOA1.

No I already knew that EAD & AP were free when filing AOS. What I learned today was that they are still free even if you wait to apply for them until separately after you file AOS. I thought they had to be at the same time to be free.
