What we've done in a pinch is book a r/t with a bogus return date in order to get the best deal. That return date could be in September and it wouldn't matter. As rates tend to fall around that time, I'd schedule my return trip for that month if possible.

PBJ is spot on. We swear by Skyscanner. We just returned from spending a month in England, and paid way less than an LAX-LHR flight typically costs. Good luck! x

Thanks for all the tips (especially using BA Avios on Aer Lingus) and Skyscanner) will check them out. I usually use Kayak but it's not being as helpful this time, maybe because I was looking for single trips.

Just an FYI re the one way flights - it's only if the journey originates in the UK that the price is extortionate. If your starting point is the US then the one ways are cheaper than returns. Not much good to you now, I know, but just saying!

The short answer: Try everything. You never know which airline and which booking website will give the lowest price until you try them all. A lot of work but if you save $200 it is worth the work.

Try different days of the week and different times of the day as well.

If you must change planes, do so outside the United States. That way your baggage gets checked through without you having to handle it, and your port of entry is the airport closest to your fiance.

Not possible a lot of the time - no direct flights from anywhere in the UK (or mainland Europe as far as I'm aware) to places like St Louis, Kansas City, Louisville, Des Moines to name but a few Midwest cities.

Ouch! I was getting quotes of a grand until I changed airports to Bristol via Dublin and it halved. Not sure why LHR hates one way fliers lol.

I did a search on skyscanner. Departure options it gave me were Heathrow or Manchester to fly into Washington Dulles then onto Johnstown, PA

+1 for Aer Lingus £378 for my one way including taxes in January. MAN-DUB-BOS

TBH even if it was more expensive, I'd still pay extra to go via Dublin for POE, just makes life easier - very little waiting the last 3 times I have been.

Sky scanner does allow you to search for one-way only flights.

Alternatively, look on Aer Lingus website itself, Skyscanner takes the prices direct from there. You can get one way tickets there.

Or Kayak, Expedia, etc.

I'm tempted to go via Dublin.... cheapest I can find one-way on Skyscanner is £551 from London Gatwick > Dublin > Chicago O'Hare > Cleveland. Gives a pretty good 3h 25m connection in Dublin for the POE part of things, then there's a 2h 10m wait at Chicago.

Would be an adventure, anyway usually I go through Newark because I'm used to it.

good luck with the move mate, i have family in Boston - i love it!, i noticed air lingus was quite cheap when i was looking for single fares... managed to book a one way (first class) through american airlines points! only cost £189, although i don't want to think how much it actually costs to build those miles! haha.
